Requirements
  • DVM, VMD or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited or recognized school of veterinary medicine.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state.
  • Experience working with swine, calves, sheep, rabbits, and rodents in a research setting.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in animal-based research.
  • Experience working with principal investigators, research staff and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service-oriented, rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively across organizational lines and in collaboration with colleagues throughout the organization.
  • Ability to supervise staff.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; aptitude for detailed work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Project management skills/experience.
Responsibilities
  • Provide daily veterinary care for the animal resource program with a census of approximately 15,000 animals in barrier, non-barrier, and large animal areas.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to provide after-hours and weekend veterinary coverage.
  • Develop and carry out a program of preventive medical care for species in his/her assigned area of clinical responsibility.
  • Oversee anesthesia, surgery, and pre- and post-procedural care of research animals.
  • Assist with post-approval monitoring.
  • Consult with principal investigators in study design, surgical planning, and other animal-related questions.
  • Review animal care and use protocols prior to submission for IACUC review.
  • Assist with IACUC activities, specifically semi-annual program reviews and semi-annual inspections of animal facilities and animal use areas.
  • Participate in training of animal care, veterinary support staff, veterinary residents, and research staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • USDA accredited veterinarian.
  • Advanced training in laboratory animal medicine; veterinary anesthesiology, surgery or emergency medicine; or other relevant veterinary specialty.
