Requirements
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Must hold Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association and the applicable state credential: Certified Nurse Assistant in Missouri, Certified Nurse Aide in Illinois or Oklahoma, Advanced Unlicensed Assistant in Oklahoma, or Certified Nursing Assistant in Wisconsin.
  • Must maintain constant alertness and work safely.
  • Must be able to stand and walk constantly; communicate orally; hear body sounds and alarms; frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 0–25 pounds; reach, grip, and use a keyboard; and use near and distance vision.
  • Must occasionally bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, sit, squat, perform repetitive foot, leg, hand, and arm movements, lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 25–50 pounds, move patients, detect odors, and drive.
Responsibilities
  • Receive patient-care assignments from the registered nurse in charge and initiate delegated nursing tasks within demonstrated competence for the patient age group served.
  • Collect and document admission-assessment and reassessment data, and provide it to the licensed nurse for analysis and validation of the patient's response to care or treatment and significant condition changes.
  • Relay information through charting and communication with team members.
  • Inform the licensed nurse of changes in patient condition or needs, patient complaints, and patient or significant-other educational needs.
  • Answer patient calls for help; take vital signs; monitor behavior and physical condition; assist with bathing, ambulation, feeding, skin care, personal and oral hygiene, bed making, dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, toileting, turning, cough and deep breathing, catheter care, biological-specimen collection, and measurement and recording of fluid intake and output.
  • Prepare patients for discharge and accompany them upon dismissal when indicated.
  • Stock and maintain supplies and equipment according to patient-care needs and cost-containment requirements.
  • Perform delegated clerical duties, including answering telephones, relaying messages, transcribing physician orders, and preparing and organizing patient medical records.
  • Orient new patients and significant others to the nursing unit.
  • Operate equipment mechanically and manually according to the user's manual, recognize common mechanical problems, and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Perform point-of-care testing according to policies and procedures when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
