Requirements
  • A High School Diploma or GED and 5 to 7 years in the laboratory animal field, or an equivalent combination of experience and education, are required.
  • Must become AALAS certified within one year of accepting the job.
  • Must know proper restraint, handling, and euthanasia techniques.
  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend English and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to explain problems, issues, and solutions and work as a service-oriented team member.
  • Must be able to repetitively lift 50 pounds and stand for long periods.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination before starting work.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • May be required to pass an FBI background check.
  • Computer skills are a plus.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily animal husbandry activities, including instructing personnel and reviewing work quality using Quality Performance worksheets.
  • Schedule daily, weekend, and holiday animal care activities to ensure quality husbandry care and efficient use of manpower.
  • Consult with the Manager regarding disciplinary action for husbandry staff.
  • Interface with primary investigators and research staff to troubleshoot and resolve simple problems and provide customer service related to husbandry and animal care.
  • Provide backup for the facility Polaris and ACT/trainer, including orientation and training for existing and new facility users and cage card and animal requisition management in Polaris.
  • Assist with ordering feed, bedding, and supplies for the animal facility.
  • Report routine maintenance repairs to Penn Facilities, follow up on completion, and keep the maintenance log up to date.
  • Oversee the receipt and inspection of animal shipments housed in the facility.
  • Perform husbandry duties when the facility is short staffed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
