LCMC Health launches community food, diaper drive. LCMC Health is calling on the Greater New Orleans community to help provide two of the most basic necessities for local families - food and diapers. This will be the first phase of a broader initiative the system is launching. Beginning Sept. 1, LCMC Health hospitals are serving as community donation sites for a systemwide food and diaper drive benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank and the Junior League of New Orleans Diaper Bank. The effort is part of LCMC Health Together for Good, a month-long community campaign bringing LCMC Health hospitals, team members, patients, and neighbors together to address food insecurity and diaper needs across the region. Members of the public are encouraged to drop off nonperishable food items and diapers at LCMC Health hospitals through Sept. 25. September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness of hunger and encourage communities to take action. LCMC Health and Second Harvest Food Bank have an ongoing partnership focused on addressing food insecurity and improving health across Greater New Orleans. From Sept. 1 through Sept. 25, LCMC Health hospitals will collect nonperishable food donations benefiting Second Harvest and the families it serves. LCMC Health is also partnering with the Junior League of New Orleans Diaper Bank in recognition of National Diaper Need Awareness Week, Sept. 14-20. The need is significant. Nearly one in two families struggles to afford enough diapers, while three in five parents experiencing diaper need report missing work or school because they cannot provide the diapers required for childcare. Additionally, 28 percent of parents experiencing diaper need report skipping meals to afford diapers. The Junior League of New Orleans is seeking to collect 15,000 diapers through its citywide diaper drive Sept. 10-17, and LCMC Health is helping support that goal by extending collections at its hospitals through Sept. 25. The greatest needs include: -Diapers in sizes 4, 5 and 6 -Baby wipes Open packages of diapers can also be donated. Community members can bring diaper donations to participating LCMC Health hospitals or to the Junior League of New Orleans headquarters, 4319 Carondelet St., during business hours Sept. 10-17. Together for Good will culminate with a community food distribution event on Sept. 29 at the Broadmoor Food Pantry (2021 S. Dupre St.). The event is open to the public and will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., or while food supplies last. In addition to grocery distribution, LCMC Health and its community partners will bring health and wellness resources directly to residents. Free services will include flu vaccinations in partnership with Walgreens and blood pressure screenings provided by LCMC Health team members. Touro will also bring its Nursing Nest to the event to provide additional support and resources for families. Welcoming a child is a deeply personal experience, and every pregnancy journey is unique with the mother and baby at its center. When expectant mothers need maternity and infant care, they deserve access to high-quality care options as close to home as possible. Through its network of hospitals across the New Orleans metropolitan area, LCMC Health helps families access maternity care close to home. Lakeview Hospital in Covington serves Northshore communities with routine prenatal care and labor & delivery services, while West Jefferson Medical Center provides maternity care for families on the Westbank. On the Eastbank of Jefferson Parish, Lakeside Hospital offers maternity care and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Specialized Care for High-Risk Pregnancies In Uptown New Orleans, Touro provides specialty care for expectant mothers experiencing high-risk pregnancies throughout the region. Touro is the only hospital in Louisiana with Level IV maternal care verification from The Joint Commission's Maternal Levels of Care Verification program. This program was developed in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and requires a comprehensive assessment of the hospital's maternal care capabilities. "We love for our mothers to deliver at their nearest community hospital, but if that is not the safest option, we have a place for you here at Touro. We have everything we need to provide safe, quality care for high-risk pregnancies," said Dr. Stacey Holman, Division Director of Women & Children's Services at Touro and Professor of OBGYN at LSU. Touro takes a multi-disciplinary approach to creating individualized care plans for expectant mothers. The core team, which includes OBGYN physicians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, pediatric specialists, and obstetric nurses, regularly collaborates to plan deliveries tailored to the needs of high-risk mothers or of infants with a known congenital condition. Cardiologists support patients with cardiac disease, and pelvic surgeons and interventional radiologists are also readily available on site. "A pregnancy can become high-risk for a lot of different reasons, but it is important to call attention to this: 'high-risk' doesn't necessarily mean something is going to go wrong," said Dr. Holman. "For us, it means that the mother or the baby has a condition that warrants extra monitoring and advanced planning when it comes to the delivery." According to Dr. Holman, early evaluation can be beneficial for conditions commonly associated with high-risk pregnancies, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Identifying risk factors early gives patients more time to connect with available providers and resources across the LCMC Health network. For example, when a high-risk patient's care is transferred from a community hospital to Touro, the team's obstetric navigators can arrange meetings with specialists and tours of the facility as needed. "At Touro, we strive to provide a personalized, patient centered birth experience and the highest level of maternal expertise for every patient, every time," Dr. Holman said. LCMC Health's maternal care facilities also offer mental health resources and wraparound resources for mothers. Social workers and case managers are available to help mothers before, during, and after pregnancy. Programs such as Family Connects, offered through Touro in partnership with the City's Health Department, provide valuable support in the immediate postpartum period, offering free home visits and connections to resources. Expanding Horizons As of this summer, LCMC Health has also expanded the reach of its high-risk specialty care into Mississippi through a new partnership with Memorial Hospital Gulfport. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists Cecilia T. Gambala, MD, and Gabriella C. Pridjian, MD, are now providing weekly outpatient services to expectant mothers along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. "It's very important to us that patients are able to access everything they need in terms of maternity care from within their community, whether they have a low-risk or high-risk pregnancy," said Dr. Holman. Earlier this year, LCMC Health began a $14 million renovation project at Lakeside Hospital, a cornerstone maternal care facility for Jefferson Parish since it opened in 1964. The renovations, scheduled for completion in 2027, include 10 updated labor and delivery suites, 30 postpartum rooms, and an updated 26-bed Level III NICU. "They have done a good job of doing the renovations in phases so that we can still maintain our daily workflow," said Dr. Amy Grace, an OBGYN physician at Lakeside Hospital and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Tulane University School of Medicine. "We already have a couple of new labor and delivery suites that are open, as well as a portion of the new postpartum wing, which has been exciting for our patients and their families." A new six-bed adult intensive care unit will also significantly expand Lakeside's capacity to care for high-risk pregnancies and other critical conditions. Upon completion of the renovation, obstetricians currently practicing at LCMC Health's East Jefferson General Hospital will relocate to Lakeside, allowing patients to receive prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care in one location. Three new operating rooms and five clinic spaces will help accommodate the expanded staffing and resources on site. The main entrance will also receive fresh, modern updates, creating an accessible and welcoming experience for families in the hospital's shared spaces. "Lakeside has been a wonderful place to practice over the past 20 years, and I feel that these renovations are truly going to make it shine," said Dr. Grace. "It's exciting to see the outside reflect the quality of care that is provided on the inside."
