Requirements
  • Candidates must be located in and authorized to work in the United States.
  • Strong working knowledge of Java and the Java Virtual Machine ecosystem, including Spring Boot or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with a durable execution or workflow engine, including modeling workflows and activities, handling retries and timeouts, and reasoning about idempotency and failure modes.
  • Experience designing and operating Kafka-based event streaming systems, including topic and partition design, consumer groups, schema management, ordering, delivery guarantees, and consumer lag.
  • Experience designing and building GraphQL application programming interfaces, including schema design, resolvers, and performance concerns such as N+1 queries, caching, and pagination.
  • Deep hands-on AWS experience architecting, deploying, and operating production systems, including EKS, networking, identity and access management, messaging, and data services.
  • Solid Kubernetes experience deploying, operating, and debugging production workloads.
  • Understanding of complex scaling issues, concurrency, backpressure, caching strategies, and failure modes across distributed systems.
  • Experience planning and executing migrations, including application replatforming, workflow engine migrations, data or schema migrations, and moving workloads between environments with minimal downtime.
  • Thorough understanding of continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines and GitOps-style delivery.
  • Experience with observability, including logging, metrics, and tracing.
  • Experience building modern microservice-based or serverless applications.
  • Database schema design and development expertise.
  • Experience running Temporal in production, self-hosted on Kubernetes or using Temporal Cloud.
  • Experience with Temporal workflow versioning and patching, safe deployments, long-running workflow migrations, worker deployment and tuning, namespace management, mutual TLS, and capacity and scaling concerns.
  • Experience operating Kafka in production, including MSK, Confluent, or self-managed Kafka on Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Kafka Connect, Kafka Streams, and schema registry workflows using Avro or Protobuf.
  • Experience migrating between Kafka clusters or providers and integrating Kafka with downstream analytical stores.
  • Experience processing large datasets using techniques such as Lambda and Kappa architectures.
  • Experience building or operating an internal developer platform with self-service, paved-path infrastructure for application teams.
  • Experience with GitOps using ArgoCD or Flux and a low- or zero-manual-apply delivery model.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform or OpenTofu, and provisioning AWS resources via Crossplane, ACK, or similar tools.
  • Experience writing Kubernetes controllers or operators using controller-runtime or kubebuilder and working with custom resource definitions.
  • Experience authoring and distributing Helm charts, including OCI or registry-based distribution.
  • Experience with secrets management, including External Secrets Operator, autoscaling using Karpenter or KEDA, and service mesh concepts such as Istio and SPIFFE/SPIRE.
  • Experience with EKS or comparable managed Kubernetes at scale.
  • Experience with additional queueing and messaging technologies such as AWS SQS/SNS or RabbitMQ.
  • API design experience across GraphQL, REST, and gRPC paradigms.
  • Experience with authentication and authorization technologies, including sessions, API tokens, and JSON Web Tokens.
  • Experience with automated testing across unit, integration, performance, and benchmarking levels.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement Java services, Temporal workflows, and Kafka-based event pipelines, and help clients adopt durable execution and event streaming from initial workflow through production scale.
  • Plan and execute large-scale modernization efforts, moving workflows, services, and data between platforms, clusters, and clouds with safety, observability, and minimal disruption.
  • Build and operate Kubernetes-native infrastructure and continuous integration and continuous delivery on AWS so application teams can ship safely and quickly.
  • Consult with clients to build outcome-driven applications and platforms, guide them through the process, identify potential problems and unknowns, and tackle challenges.
  • Travel an average of 3–5 days every quarter for client or team needs.
  • Present at conferences, attend and provide training, plan and run meetups or local groups, and create content related to areas of expertise.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with additional backend languages such as Go, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or C# is a plus.
  • Temporal is preferred; Apache Airflow, Prefect, or similar workflow engines are also relevant.
  • Experience with GraphQL federation is a plus.
  • OpenTelemetry experience is a plus.
