Requirements
  • A minimum of four years of experience as a sworn Police Officer or Peace Officer at a supervisory rank, or commensurate military experience at a minimum grade of E6 with an honorable discharge.
  • Certification as a New York State Community College Peace Officer must be obtained within one year of appointment.
  • No convictions for any misdemeanor or felony in any jurisdiction at any time.
  • A valid New York State Driver’s License and a driving record qualifying the candidate to operate a college vehicle.
  • A New York State license to possess and carry a handgun.
  • Sufficient physical condition to meet the demands of the assignment.
  • Experience handling critical incidents demonstrated through prior employment and training in law enforcement, military service, or another public safety profession.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Director of Public Safety and Health Services in implementing community policing systems and administering safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist in preparing and updating plans for emergency and disaster conditions and security incidents.
  • Assist in developing Standard Operating Procedures consistent with College policy and current field best practices.
  • Assist in developing emergency response procedures through advisement and participation in designated planning committees.
  • Respond to incidents, including extreme acts of violence, and take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and well-being of people on College premises.
  • Patrol campus buildings and grounds for disturbances, violations of law or building regulations, and fire hazards.
  • Prevent disruptive actions and criminal activities where possible.
  • Establish effective working relationships with local public law enforcement agencies.
  • Quell campus disturbances using tact, good judgment, and the level of force that is reasonable, necessary, and justified under New York State Penal Law Article 35.
  • Possess and carry a firearm during on-duty employment when duly licensed by New York State and authorized by the President.
  • Coordinate security activities to maintain control over College property.
  • Execute policies established by the President and Board of Trustees regarding maintenance of order on campus.
  • Train, schedule, and supervise Campus Public Safety and Health Service personnel under the Director’s direction.
  • Work collaboratively with state and local public law enforcement agencies.
  • Administer emergency first aid when needed.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Public Safety and Health Services.
