Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is required, unless equivalent relevant experience substitutes for the education requirement at the hiring manager's discretion.
  • Six years of software development experience, including pioneering new approaches and technologies in engineering, is required.
  • Experience with web-based applications and web services using Java, Representational State Transfer, ServiceNow, and other web technologies is required.
  • Experience interfacing with databases and integrating third-party products with existing infrastructure is required.
  • Understanding of software development processes, including planning, measurement, coding, testing, reuse, tools, abstraction, algorithms and complexity, security, and basic system understanding, is required.
  • Ability to use engineering tools and techniques such as database management, user interface development, and inter-process communications is required.
  • Ability to create application- or system-level designs that satisfy functional and non-functional requirements, using design patterns, system decomposition, security, fault tolerance, and an appropriate design methodology, is required.
  • Ability to understand the strengths, weaknesses, and practical considerations of different Software Development Life Cycle models is required.
  • Understanding of Software as a Service, scalability, reliability, cost, public cloud environments, and the use of data and metrics to analyze Key Performance Indicators is required.
  • Ability to explain system and subsystem capabilities to users and partner with Operations to solve system-level problems is required.
  • Understanding of the online higher education landscape, including its competitive landscape, opportunities, and feature gaps, is required.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks and dependencies and work with leads or managers to plan appropriate strategies is required.
Responsibilities
  • Research, design, develop, analyze, test, and implement software operating or application systems.
  • Communicate project information to clients, project managers, and other design personnel.
  • Maintain complete software documentation and working relationships with clients and staff.
  • Support team members and help ensure established goals and deadlines are met.
  • Keep management informed of status and significant problems.
  • Act as an expert in assigned areas of software engineering and mentor junior engineers.
  • Maintain accountability for service quality and the on-time, on-budget, and on-scope delivery of assigned projects.
  • Serve as a lead or consultant for at least one team and as a go-to person in a sub-discipline or application area.
  • Provide formal and informal mentoring and direction during team meetings and problem solving.
  • Communicate with other disciplines to identify and resolve problems and contribute to organizational success.
  • Lead teams or cross-functional groups in identifying and transferring knowledge through presentations, internal white papers, and other formal and informal means.
  • Consult on technical risks and dependencies during team or portfolio planning and identify potential problems and solutions in advance.
  • Answer questions authoritatively and accurately about the area of ownership or the overall platform.
  • Contribute directly and lead others in rapidly identifying system problems to minimize service restoration time.
  • Assist engineering management in identifying team improvement opportunities, including training, technical feedback, and emerging problems.
  • Plan and execute testing strategies that maximize quality while minimizing implementation costs.
  • Interpret functional, non-functional, and implied requirements into designs and code, identify gaps and risks, and propose solutions.
  • Guide junior engineers in planning and executing requirements delivery.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience with IntelliJ, Visual Studio Code, JIRA, and Git is preferred.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum project development is preferred.
  • Experience with Java or a similar object-oriented language is preferred.
  • Experience with IDM/OSSO, Hibernate/Seam, and Banner is preferred.
  • Experience integrating applications with legacy systems is preferred.
  • Experience with cloud-native development or porting/refactoring on-site systems to the cloud, preferably AWS, is preferred.
  • Experience with J2EE, Java Enterprise Edition, JavaScript, and SQL is preferred.
  • Technical certifications are preferred.
