Requirements
  • A High School Diploma or GED is required, or equivalent experience gained from formal education, on-the-job training, and/or work and life experience.
  • Two years of experience processing long term disability claims is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of claim management techniques and critical thinking in activities requiring analysis and/or investigation is required.
  • Experience working in confidential or protected identification environments is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Good math and calculation skills are required.
  • The ability to work well in a high-visibility, public-oriented environment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain and analyze information to make claim decisions and payments on long term disability, voluntary disability, and waiver of premium claims.
  • Review and investigate disability claims through telephone and written contact with claimants, employers or supervisors, credit unions, treating physicians, and other applicable parties to gather pertinent data.
  • Adjudicate claims accurately and fairly in accordance with the contract, claim policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations while meeting productivity and quality standards.
  • Use appropriate medical and risk resources, adhere to referral policies, and transfer claims to the appropriate risk level in a timely manner.
  • Conduct in-depth pre-existing condition or contestable investigations when applicable.
  • Calculate benefit payments, including partial disability benefits, integration with other income sources, survivor benefits, and residual disability benefits.
  • Develop and maintain online claim data and paper files when applicable.
  • Provide respectful, prompt, concise, and accurate customer service in an environment with competing demands.
  • Fully investigate and adjudicate a large volume of simple to complex claims.
  • Identify and investigate changes in the Total Disability definition, including any-occupation changes.
  • Independently review and manage complex claims within the $1,500 per month approval authority limit.
  • Independently determine whether a policyholder with a life policy of up to $125,000 is eligible for waiver of premium.
  • Manage an assigned caseload of 60 to 80 simple to complex cases independently.
  • Collaborate with team members and management to identify and implement improvement opportunities.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate degree in Business, Finance, Social Work, or Human Resources is preferred.
  • A Level I LOMA designation is preferred.
