- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- The candidate must be a graduate of a Medical Assistant Program, a graduate of the Med Ed Program, or have one year of clinical experience.
- The candidate must obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
- The candidate must complete a state criminal background check and a federal background check where applicable for regulated areas.
- The position requires strength and stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The candidate must be able to position or lift patients and stand or walk for 4 to 12 hours per day.
- The candidate must work in a clinical outpatient environment with frequent exposure to biohazards and communicable disease and respond quickly to varying provider and patient demands.
- Perform duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic setting.
- Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
- Support medical staff to meet patients’ needs and ensure efficient operation of the outpatient unit.
- Assist providers with requisitions or forms for patient examinations or testing and help patients and providers with medical office visits.
- Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of the attending provider.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
- Obtain and document patient specimens as ordered.
- Document and report test results to the medical provider.
- After training and skills testing, perform assigned or ordered point-of-care tests and maintain quality-control testing and logs.
- Schedule additional ancillary testing and assist providers with requisitions or forms for patient examinations or testing.
- Act as a chaperone during medical examinations.
- Ensure medical records and test results, including records from referring physicians, are available for visits and inspect records for correct order and completeness.
- Monitor the nurse call system, relay information to appropriate staff, and transmit information to appropriate staff by telephone.
- Provide assistance and information to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
- Participate in the Quality Assurance Program.
- Generate required patient charge data according to WVU Medicine outpatient procedures.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment for patient care by preparing orders and reporting needs to the supervisor.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the use and care of printers, embossers, computers, and other equipment.
- Assist with maintenance of inventory and equipment on the assigned outpatient unit.
- Schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using the computerized system according to outpatient clinic policy and procedures.
- Schedule and coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Assist with patient registration, collect identification and billing information, enter data into the computer, obtain charts and fee sheets, and obtain signatures for release of information and consent to treatment.
- Assist the Registration Specialist with depositing money and late-night coverage.
- Assist the Manager or Supervisor with unit correspondence using computer software.
- Process and mail letters to patients.
- Registration or certification as a medical assistant is preferred.
- One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care is preferred.
