Job Description Summary
The Department of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina seeks candidates for a Healthcare Analyst position in the Department of Surgery Innovation Center. The incumbent will be comfortable in navigating complex electronic health record environments including data extraction, independently working and performing complex technical analyses, and programming software to interface with end-users including patients and/or clinicians. This individual will report to Arman Kilic, MD, a heart surgeon with expertise in artificial intelligence and digital health who directs the innovation center. Duties will include data extraction, analytics, and data / software engineering. In addition, the candidate will have regular meetings with members of the innovation team including Dr. Kilic. The incumbent will have ample opportunities to present and publish academic work and have an integral role in innovation efforts stemming from the center.
The candidate will interface with our EPIC FHIR API to obtain EHR (electronic health record) data elements. Preferably, the candidate will also know how to experiment with NLP techniques, including LLMs (large language models), to extract relevant information not directly coded in structured EHR fields from clinical notes.

Pay Range:
$68,397.00 - $97,472.00 - $126,547.00 (min - mid - max)
Job Duties:
35% - Leadership role and supervision of residents, students, and others that are members of the innovation center working on EPIC data extraction and engineering (including directing meetings and communicating with such parties, and setting action plans, milestones and deliverables)
- Will attend weekly meetings with all innovation center group members and provide technical supervision of data extraction and data engineering efforts
- Will create and direct separate meetings ad hoc to provide additional oversight, supervision, and feedback regarding data extraction and engineering for various projects
- Will create education modules and example cases to educate team members on programming and data extraction methods
- Will set action plans, milestones, and deliverables for residents, students and others working on projects
35% - Data extraction using EPIC FHIR API for dataset building
- Will use existing skill sets in EPIC FHIR to build data extraction pipelines for databases needed for academic research, quality improvement, and innovation
- Will participate in weekly meetings with Dr. Kilic to identify priorities in data extraction projects and then execute on these projects
- Will lead projects in developing novel methods of extraction of raw data from the EPIC environment with the use of AI, NLP, and large language models
25% - Data engineering and computer programming of pipelines for creation of analysis-ready meta-layers of data
- In addition to extraction of raw data, the incumbent will develop and implement programming methods to clean the raw data and transform it into “analysis ready” datasets
- Will meet regularly with Dr. Kilic to identify mapping of raw data into specified data fields and formats
5% - Writing or editing manuscripts and abstract presentations
Preferred qualifications:
Advanced degree (masters or doctorate) or equivalent employment experience in healthcare analytics/IT, machine learning or a related quantitative field
Prior experience with healthcare APIs (and in particular Epic FHIR)
Experience and high level proficiency in programming and data analytics, including data visualization, data integration, machine learning, and predictive modeling
Experience and high level proficiency in using relevant tools and software such as Python, R, and/or SQL
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with faculty, surgical and data science trainees, and students
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to supervise and teach others
Excellent interpersonal skills

Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree and four years experience in automated information or communication system design, installation, operation, repair, sales or marketing. Related experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
