Tool and Die Machinist II

This job group's main responsibility is to provide specialty machining services to the company. Examples of the job group's activities include machining, fitting, and related operations necessary to make jigs, fixtures, tools, products, and related items from various materials. Assist in diagnosing, developing solutions for, and correcting tool, jig, and fixture problems for operations.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Locate and read blueprints, job travelers, and bills of material.
• Advanced set up/Operate manual and CNC machines such as Bridgeport, surface grinders, tool and cutter grinders, engine lathe 3 and 4 axis VMC, CNC lathes, drill press, and band saws. Teardown of fixtures and tooling.
• Use precision measuring instruments to ensure conformance of finished part to specifications. Enhanced bench layout skills using surface plate, height gage, sine plate optical comparator, and other advanced inspection equipment.
• Responsible for upkeep of the machines – cleaning, filling oils, filling coolants, and other production maintenance upkeep.
• Remanufacture of existing tooling, fixtures, jigs, and inspection tools.
• Capable of doing reverse engineering of tooling and assisting in its design.
• Responsible for advanced jig and fixture fabrication including fit at assembly, enhanced bench work, burring parts, checking parts, and filling out audit sheets.
• Must be able to communicate with leaders and work well with others in a team environment.
• Must be familiar with the department's production goals; help meet them through the application of best practices identified by Engineering and Management.
• Work efficiently throughout the day despite machine downtime or other production delays.
• Follow all safety and housekeeping procedures.
• Conformance to production and administrative procedures.
• Enhancement of existing processes.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Journeymen's card or documented equivalent experience in tool maker environment
• 4-5 years previous manual and tool room CNC machining experience required
• Tool and cutter resharpening skills.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

• Skilled in measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators and optical comparators.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints to manufacture tools, fixtures, and gages to engineering specifications.
• Advanced knowledge of cutting tools and their function in the machining process (examples include drills, end mills, form tools, and insert tip tooling).
• Advanced knowledge of machining, heat treating, welding, and brazing techniques.
• Ability to reproduce sharp tools to manufacturing specifications using safe grinding practices; allowing tools to be re-introduced into machining operations.
• Technical Ability – effectively apply written/verbal instructions from procedures, documents, and blueprints, etc.
• Ability to hold close tolerances to Nordson’s engineering standards.
• Ability to Learn – assimilating and apply new, job-related information in a timely manner
• Adaptability – maintaining effectiveness in a changing environment, assignments, responsibilities and/or priorities
• Basic Computer Skills
