Responsibilities
  • Provides care to infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, adults, and elderly in a rural ambulatory care clinic.
  • Works with providers giving support such as rooming patients, point of care testing as ordered, answering phones, processing provider orders, data entry, and participation in training processes.
  • Performs administrative duties, data management, and basic clinical tasks that are more complex than Clinical Assistant 1, such as nebulizer treatments, cast removal, diabetes mellitus foot screenings and other procedures per competency assessments.
  • Prepares for patient visit by reviewing chart for needed forms, follow-up labs or procedures needed.
  • Obtains and records age-appropriate vital signs per department protocol; obtains medical history update and confirms medication history.
  • Accurately collects and documents information in patient chart; keeps patient records orderly; ensures medication and immunization records are current.
  • Recognizes signs or symptoms requiring prompt intervention and acts appropriately; transports patients within the facility; manages patient care duties while maintaining clinic flow.
  • Reports and records changes observed in patient condition or behavior; observes patients to ensure supervision for vulnerable individuals.
  • Sets up equipment and supplies for routine exams and minor procedures; prepares patients for and assists with procedures, treatments, and minor surgeries.
  • Provides specimen collection and Point of Care Testing; follows protocol for collecting, labeling, and transporting specimens; applies heat/cold packs, abdominal binders, anti-embolism stockings, obtains 12 lead EKGs, peak flow, provides oxygen as ordered.
  • Assists patients with ambulation or transfer; performs minor treatments such as dressing changes, nebulizer treatments, ear lavage, cast removal, AED practices, airway management techniques, and diabetes foot screening.
  • Provides basic patient education materials and discharge instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Sanitizes exam rooms between patients; processes surgical equipment and maintains sterile package integrity; maintains a safe and clean environment.
  • Ensures exam room supplies are organized and stocked; maintains lab equipment and organizes lab supplies; inventories and stocks medical supplies.
  • Disposes of solid and liquid waste and infectious materials according to infection control standards.
  • Performs basic health coaching and patient education according to evidence-based guidelines.
  • Conducts daily/weekly/monthly quality assurance checks on equipment and maintains logs.
  • Demonstrates correct utilization of computer-based health information systems and electronic health record systems; notifies provider or supervisor of repairs or safety concerns.
  • Answers inquiries from nursing staff, provider staff, other departments, visitors, and patients; uses proper telephone etiquette; makes confirmation calls to patients as needed.
  • Provides cross-coverage for peers; attends and participates in at least 50% of staff meetings annually; participates in unit goal setting; complies with scheduling guidelines; discusses department issues with manager; adheres to dress code; refers unresolved problems to manager for resolution; performs other duties as assigned.
