Requirements
  • An active Medical Assisting certification is required, such as Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Nationally Certified Medical Assistant, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant, subject to South Carolina acceptance requirements.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations.
  • In South Carolina, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program, an approved career and technical education health sciences program, a United States military medical assisting program, a United States Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship program, or an employer-delivered training program aligned to a nationally accredited certification exam is required.
  • Candidates must understand and adhere to the legal responsibilities and requirements of the Medical Assistant role.
  • Candidates must maintain clinical and administrative skills according to departmental competency guidelines.
  • Candidates must be able to use medical terminology and standard office equipment, including a computer, copier, telephone, and fax machine.
  • Candidates must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and teams in a high-volume environment.
  • Candidates must complete required skills or competency checklists for assisting physicians with examination and treatment tasks.
Responsibilities
  • Provide indirect and/or direct patient care within the Medical Assistant scope of practice and applicable state guidelines.
  • Collect and document patient information, including the chief complaint, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, temperature, medical history, vital statistics, and test results.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Administer ordered medications, including oral, injectable, and topical medications, as directed by the provider.
  • Assist patients and providers with virtual health visits by setting up the appropriate platform, pre-charting, confirming patient preparedness, troubleshooting issues, obtaining the chief complaint and health-maintenance information, reviewing medications, and collecting other relevant details.
  • Document accurately and appropriately in electronic medical records and manage electronic health record inbox messages according to the provider’s instructions.
  • Perform front-desk workflows, including MyChart requests, patient registration, scheduling, telephone triage, cash handling, and check-in and check-out.
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits, and collect co-payments as needed.
  • Order supplies, track referrals and laboratory or diagnostic tests, dispose of contaminated supplies, and maintain clean, orderly, safe, and functional work and examination areas.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log specimens, and prepare them for testing.
  • Provide authorized prescription and drug-refill information to pharmacies as directed by the provider.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Perform general office duties such as answering telephones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms.
  • Assist physicians with examination and treatment tasks, including handing instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, and changing wound dressings.
  • Travel to other facilities for providers or adjust work hours to meet patient-care needs when directed by the practice manager.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program is preferred in all states except South Carolina.
  • Completion of an externship or clinical laboratory training is preferred.
  • One year of recent Medical Assisting experience is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification is preferred at hire for Bon Secours Mercy Health locations, though it is required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations.

Steel work begins on $1.2B Roper St. Francis heathcare campus in South Carolina. * Posted on July 22, 2026 The Barton Malow | Edifice joint-venture team has begun structural steel work at Roper St. Francis Healthcare's future Roper Hospital campus in North Charleston, South Carolina, marking a pivotal milestone in the construction of the $1.2-billion facility. The start of steel work signals the project's transition from below-grade construction to its vertical rise, bringing the building's form to life on the 27-acre site. The new campus, designed by E4H Environments for Health Architecture (a MOREgroup Brand) and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will deliver 805,000 square feet of advanced healthcare space for the Lowcountry community. The building will include 328 inpatient beds, a 47-bay emergency department, 44 critical care beds, 18 operating rooms, a comprehensive imaging department and a 12-bay hemodialysis unit. Completion is targeted for 2029. Barton Malow | Edifice is using a target-value delivery method, which allows the team to adapt design components while maintaining budget and schedule integrity. The approach has been instrumental in navigating site-specific challenges, including complex seismic conditions, FAA height restrictions and a high-water table.
