Requirements
  • A Master's degree in library or information science accredited by the American Library Association or a recognized equivalent, or another relevant advanced degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a position with managerial responsibilities for services and staff, preferably in an academic library.
  • Ability to lead and manage librarians, professionals, and support staff, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Active scholarship and professional service sufficient for appointment at the Associate or Full Librarian level for an academic appointment.
  • Ability to develop, in a consultative style, a clear vision for the portfolio within the context of McGill's strategic objectives and plans.
  • A successful record of leadership, planning, project management, and budgeting in managing library technology programs and services.
  • Knowledge of technologies and trends in the general information technology industry.
  • Ability to foresee and articulate the short- and long-term ramifications of technological decisions, with successful experience leading and implementing change.
  • Ability to bring innovative and complex technology projects to completion in a timely manner and document architecture and technical design for diverse stakeholders and audiences.
  • A sophisticated understanding of how information is organized, accessed, and used to support the academic and research missions of a university.
  • Knowledge of library digital preservation and repository platforms, initiatives, and practices.
  • Familiarity with traditional library and university information technology systems and meaningful prior experience with emerging digital technologies, including discovery and digital repository solutions, linked data, artificial intelligence, or open-source developments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility of services or the work environment.
  • Knowledge of the history of Indigenous communities in Canada, including residential schools, and commitment to reconciliation.
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • English communication skills sufficient for day-to-day duties, assessed at level 4 on McGill's 1-to-4 scale.
  • Ability to meet with donors, alumni, and representatives from granting agencies to develop and maintain long-term relationships and attract funding.
Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership, planning, management, and implementation for innovative and responsive library systems, applications, and technology services supporting teaching, learning, and research at McGill University.
  • Serve as the primary technology strategist for McGill Libraries and collaborate with the Library Cabinet and Library Management Group.
  • Articulate the vision and lead development of the Libraries' digitization strategy and programs for digital scholarship, preservation, and dissemination of rare and unique collections.
  • Provide administrative leadership for digital initiatives, digital preservation, and information technology services administered by the Libraries, including related policies.
  • Develop, manage, and implement projects that provide outstanding services and meet evolving user needs.
  • Ensure the integrity, safety, and data recovery plans for library information systems and services to support business continuity.
  • Provide creative leadership to IT professionals, librarians, support staff, and student employees and foster a culture of innovation, engagement, and collaboration.
  • Lead development of library technology spaces and programs in collaboration with library heads.
  • Guide and support the selection, adoption, and technical integration of emerging library technologies, services, and digital initiatives in online and physical library spaces.
  • Serve as the primary liaison and collaborate with the University's Information Technology Services.
  • Develop proposals for funding and grant agencies to secure support for library technological innovations.
  • Create programs that make McGill Libraries a trusted partner in digital project development and develop partnerships with faculty, staff, and external organizations at local, provincial, national, and international levels.
  • Coordinate strategies with the Dean and Library Cabinet to foster and enhance the Libraries' research and scholarship.
  • Advance equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples through Libraries' services and workplace.
  • Share responsibility as an active member of the Library Cabinet for library-wide planning, resource allocation, and other matters assigned to the Cabinet.
  • Represent McGill Libraries in national and international conferences and other forums dedicated to library technologies and digital initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in professional library associations and at professional conferences as appropriate.
  • Participate in advancement activities and cultivate relationships with donors.
  • Promote and foster a supportive environment built on appreciation, recognition, learning, and professional growth.
  • Take responsibility for other strategic initiatives as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of French.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively as a member of a senior management team in a collegial environment, with experience building and managing relationships at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy, tact, and discretion when handling confidential or sensitive information and dealing with senior administration and external agencies.

Club M&A and McGill's Dobson Centre launch acquisition programme as $218B in Canadian businesses set for ownership transition

Club M&A Canada and McGill's Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship have opened registration for their first Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition programme. The intensive four-day course, running 27–30 October in Montreal, targets professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs interested in acquiring existing small or medium-sized businesses. The programme addresses a significant succession challenge in Canada. According to the Business Development Bank of Canada, nearly one in five Canadian businesses will undergo ownership transition within five years, representing over $300 billion in business revenue. Marc Deegan, founder of R33 Ventures, will serve as programme director. The curriculum covers developing investment theses, target evaluation, financial and legal considerations, acquisition financing, and post-acquisition transition. Instructors include transaction professionals, lawyers, tax specialists, investors, and entrepreneurs with acquisition experience. Admission is by application, with no prior M&A experience required.
