Amazon cuts AI chip lifespan to 5 years as $220B spending plan outpaces annual revenue

Amazon's $220 billion 2026 capital spending plan faces challenges as AI chip development accelerates faster than expected. CEO Andy Jassy told investors the spending splits between data centres with 30-plus-year lifespans and servers lasting five to six years. However, Amazon cut server lifespan estimates from six years to five in January 2025, citing "an increased pace of technology development, particularly in artificial intelligence and machine learning." The company also retired certain equipment early. These changes cost approximately $700 million in reduced 2025 operating income, $920 million in accelerated depreciation charges, and an additional $600 million expected later in 2025. Amazon has repeatedly adjusted server depreciation schedules, extending lifespans from three years in 2020 to six years in 2024, before reversing course this year.

Amazon CEO predicts demand surge could push company past $15T valuation

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has predicted unprecedented growth for the company's cloud computing division, suggesting a potential market capitalisation exceeding $15 trillion. The company recently surpassed $3 trillion following an 18% stock surge after reporting strong earnings. Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounts for 60% of the company's operating profit and recently posted 37% growth, its best performance in years. To meet surging demand for AI computing resources, Amazon plans to spend $220 billion on capital expenditures in 2026. Jassy revealed that Amazon expects computing capacity shortages to extend through 2027, with demand already appearing for 2028. The company's major clients include AI leaders like Anthropic, maker of the Claude generative AI model. AWS remains the world's largest cloud computing service, benefiting from both first-mover advantage and strong product delivery.

Amazon renews 300,000 sq ft downtown San Francisco lease despite closing AI lab

Amazon has renewed its lease at 525 Market St. in downtown San Francisco, occupying roughly 300,000 square feet with a slight expansion of about 30,000 square feet. The multi-year extension, spanning less than 10 years, comes despite the company closing its AI lab in the city last month. The downtown AI hub employed about 80 people working on artificial general intelligence. Amazon said it is "sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers" whilst continuing to invest in key areas. Earlier this year, Amazon confirmed it would exit 188 Spear St., clearing more than half of the 12-storey tower before its lease expires next year. The company maintains another San Francisco location at 660 Third St. and is expanding its automation and robotics operations elsewhere in the city.

Amazon crosses $3T valuation on cloud boom while capex hits $220B

Amazon surpassed $3 trillion in market value on 3 August, with shares rising 5% to $285.01. The stock has gained over 23% this year, reaching the milestone just two years after hitting $2 trillion in June 2024. The surge followed last week's earnings report, which showed Amazon Web Services accelerating to 36.7% growth, its strongest performance in over four years. AWS now generates 59% of the company's operating profit, making cloud computing the primary driver of Amazon's bottom line rather than e-commerce. However, Amazon is spending $220 billion on data centre capital expenditure this year. The investment only pays off if AI-driven cloud demand continues growing. Other tech giants face similar pressures, with Alphabet posting negative free cash flow and Meta's free cash flow falling 91% last quarter.

Globalstar posts $64.8M Q2 revenue, sets satellite launch as Amazon merger clears HSR

Globalstar reported second quarter 2026 revenue of $64.8 million, achieving record Commercial IoT subscriber activations. The company's proposed merger with Amazon advanced through regulatory approval, with the HSR Act waiting period expiring in July 2026. The transaction remains subject to additional regulatory approvals and certain satellite milestones, with an expected closing in 2027. Globalstar continued executing its satellite constellation initiatives, with the first replacement satellite launch rescheduled for later this month. The company is also developing third-generation satellites and expanding its international ground station network across North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Chief Executive Paul Jacobs highlighted the company's focus on investing in infrastructure whilst progressing through the Amazon merger regulatory process.
