Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I pathway.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I pathway.
  • Certification as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or equivalent is required through an accepted certifying organization.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited practical nurse program is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I pathway.
  • An active Licensed Practical Nurse license in South Carolina or a compact state is required.
  • Applicants must be able to perform the listed physical duties, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching, repetitive motions, respirator qualification, and lifting or carrying objects weighing approximately 50 pounds.
  • Applicants must maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe environment, and work indoors.
Responsibilities
  • Provide quality patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed healthcare provider.
  • Room patients, take vital signs and health histories, document in the electronic medical record, give injections, and assist with minor procedures.
  • Calibrate, clean, and maintain clinical and laboratory equipment as required, with documentation.
  • Maintain and review patient records and charts, document test and examination results, and communicate appropriately.
  • Communicate the plan of care to patients and develop patient education materials as necessary.
  • Maintain examination-room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness of the patient-care environment.
  • Maintain timely patient flow and assist with scheduling appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability.
  • Screen patients for appropriate information and provide patient education based on diagnosis and treatment.
  • Observe, record, and report patients' physical and psychosocial conditions and reactions to medications and treatments to the physician.
  • Respond to and triage phone calls and call in orders as directed by the physician.
  • Instruct patients regarding treatment or medication as ordered by the physician.
  • Monitor and distribute medications, including samples and controlled substances.
  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as necessary.
  • Instruct patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of patient care experience is preferred.
