Requirements
  • Verifiable completion of one of the following: a state-approved emergency medical technician course, one year of medical assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting, a medical assisting education program, or the University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program.
  • Obtain a current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system within 30 days of hire.
  • Demonstrated availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in a 24/7 patient care environment.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the specific clinic's specialty skills within six weeks of hire, after completing basic competency testing.
  • Ability to remain on their feet for long periods and move and lift patients and handle equipment.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements with or without accommodation, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, walking, standing, and exposure to infectious materials and contaminated bodily fluids.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures by recording vital signs and responses to standardized medical history questions.
  • Report observed patient concerns and changes in condition to licensed staff.
  • Perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments waived laboratory tests and report results to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform additional skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization, and intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections.
  • Chaperone healthcare providers during patient examinations and assist with procedures.
  • Monitor and clean patient examination rooms, unit areas, and equipment; report outdated supplies, stock levels, restocking needs, and equipment repairs.
  • Answer telephones, forward messages, and schedule appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests under the direction of licensed staff.
  • Perform clerical functions including filing patient medical information, compiling department charts, obtaining records from other providers, and entering billing charges.
  • Complete mandatory education in infection prevention and control, safety, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, equipment usage, and procedures.
  • Perform patient phlebotomy according to clinic procedures and physician orders after specialized training.
  • Apply leads and monitor patients for diagnostic procedures such as electrocardiograms and ultrasound scans under direct supervision.
  • Assist with inpatient and family education by providing educational materials and general health information.
  • Assist with transporting patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units as directed by licensed staff.
  • Instruct patients in Basic Life Support requirements.
  • Perform intravenous access.
  • Perform other duties based on department assignment.
  • Work rotating schedules, including variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays, to meet staffing and patient-care demands in a 24/7 health system; maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
