Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing.
  • No experience is required.
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • A Registered Nurse license is required according to the applicable work-location state: Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, or Wisconsin, including a compact-state Registered Nurse license where specified.
  • Ability to maintain competency in all required nursing skills.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical requirements, including standing and walking, lifting and carrying, pushing and pulling, patient movement, and occasional driving.
Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled nursing care to residents according to established care plans and federal and state regulations.
  • Provide quality care to acute, subacute, and chronically ill residents.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to standards of care.
  • Provide direction to certified nursing assistants and auxiliary staff and monitor unit workflow to coordinate care.
  • Use the nursing process for assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
  • Report significant changes in residents' conditions to physicians as indicated.
  • Maintain accurate medication inventory at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Distribute medications accurately according to the five rights and monitor for medication side effects.
  • Provide medications consistently with manufacturers' guidelines.
  • Participate in report meetings at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Communicate with residents, guardians, and family members about residents' current conditions and needs in accordance with regulations and standards of practice.
  • Teach and train residents and families as needed.
  • Ensure preventive measures are in place, including specialty mattresses, foam boots, weekly skin checks, turning and repositioning schedules, toileting schedules, and wheelchair cushions.
  • Follow up on reports of rashes, open areas, edema, blisters, skin tears, or bleeding.
  • Respond promptly to alarms.
  • Ensure restraint alternatives are in place or activated, including personal alarms, cushion alarms, wheelchair belts, tumble mats, alarm mats, bolstered beds, and hip protectors.
  • Provide and ensure quality end-of-life care.
  • Use the comfort basket to meet resident and family needs.
  • Ensure hygiene, comfort, and spiritual needs are met.
  • Treat pain and restlessness.
  • Offer family courtesy meal trays and other amenities.
  • Demonstrate compliance with post-mortem care procedures.
  • Participate in the departure ceremony.
  • Perform point-of-care testing according to policies and procedures when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
