San Francisco Compute

View

San Francisco Compute provides short-term access to large-scale GPU clusters for AI training and inference. Clients rent high-end hardware—like H100 GPUs—on a pay-per-use basis with no long-term contracts, enabling bursts of compute when needed. The service is designed for academia, startups, and enterprises that require substantial power for limited periods, with transparent, competitive pricing and strong technical support. The company differentiates itself by offering some of the lowest-priced H100 training clusters in the world, combined with fast, reliable help desk assistance. Its goal is to make high-performance computing affordable and flexible, so customers can scale computing power up or down according to demand.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • December 2025 Series A raised $40 million at a $300 million valuation.
  • Soluna's 80-H100 deal gave SF Compute immediate inventory for enterprise demand.
  • Staffing grew to roughly 54-61 employees in 2026, signaling operational scaling.

What critics are saying

  • Nvidia supply concentration exposes SF Compute to H100 shortages and pricing shocks.
  • Spheron and other GPU marketplaces undercut rates, compressing margins by 2026.
  • If customers bypass the marketplace and buy direct from providers, SF Compute loses relevance.

What makes San Francisco Compute unique

  • SF Compute sells short-term H100 cluster access, not annual cloud commitments.
  • Its marketplace resells unused GPU capacity, targeting flexible AI training demand.
  • By 2026, it offered self-serve cluster buying and CLI access for teams.

OpenAI builds first custom chip Jalapeño to cut AI computing costs

OpenAI has partnered with Broadcom to develop Jalapeño, its first custom chip designed for large language model inference. The move follows similar efforts by Google, Amazon and Meta to reduce computing costs through proprietary hardware. Inference accounts for two-thirds of total compute spending, according to Spheron. However, custom chips won't immediately lower costs for end users unless companies like OpenAI reduce their API pricing. The shift reflects broader industry challenges with AI costs. A global compute shortage is affecting companies from frontier labs to regional startups, with Southeast Asian SMEs potentially being priced out. Meanwhile, San Francisco Compute is addressing the problem by offering a marketplace where companies can sublease excess computing capacity, helping them avoid overcommitting resources to long-term contracts.
