Walmart's ad business surges 44% as retail-media division generates 70% margins

Walmart's advertising division, Walmart Connect, has become the company's fastest-growing segment, surging 44% last quarter — the strongest growth since the retailer began reporting the metric. The advertising business now generates approximately one-third of Walmart's operational income despite representing only a modest portion of sales, with gross margins around 70%. This shift comes as growth in Walmart's core retail operations slows, with US same-store sales decelerating to 4.1% last quarter. Analysts expect this figure to fall below 4% when the company reports earnings on Thursday. Walmart is expanding the advertising business through AI tools, including its Sparky shopping assistant and the Vizio platform. For investors, the focus is shifting from store sales growth to how much profit Walmart can extract from its customer data and traffic.

Walmart acquires 77% stake in Flipkart for $2B in fresh equity funding

US retail giant Walmart has acquired approximately 77% of Indian e-commerce company Flipkart in one of the biggest investments in India's online retail sector. The deal includes $2 billion in fresh equity funding to accelerate Flipkart's growth. Existing shareholders, including Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, Tencent, Tiger Global and Microsoft, will retain the remaining stake. Both companies will maintain their respective brands and operating structures in India, with Flipkart's current management team continuing to run the business. Walmart International President Judith McKenna said the partnership would combine both companies' strengths and contribute to India's economic growth. The acquisition gives Walmart a major foothold in India's rapidly expanding e-commerce market, driven by increasing smartphone use and digital payments. Flipkart's financial performance will now be included in Walmart's International business segment.

Analyst backs Target over Walmart ahead of earnings despite 47% rally on margin recovery potential

Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe told CNBC that Target offers more upside than Walmart, despite Target's 47% rally over the past year. Target trades at 17 times forward P/E compared to Walmart's 38 times multiple. Tarlowe's bull case centres on three factors: reasonable valuation, new management executing on merchandising, and margins at cyclical lows. Target's operating margin sits at 4%, well below its historical 6% average, creating potential for improvement. The company has refreshed 50% of its product assortment this year, driving traffic growth of nearly 4%. Target is investing up to $2 billion this year to support the turnaround. Both retailers report earnings this week. Target reports on 19 August, with Walmart following on 20 August.

The district emphasized its commitment to creating a supportive workplace where educators and staff feel respected, valued, and heard, while also highlighting investments in competitive salaries, technology, facilities, and employee resources. At No. 14, Arvest Bank, headquartered in Lowell, made the list for the seventh consecutive year. The bank credited its people-first culture and employees' dedication to supporting one another and serving their communities. Tyson Foods, headquartered in Springdale, ranked No. 15, while the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville came in at No. 19. The university highlighted its continued focus on investing in employees and providing the resources and support they need to succeed. At No. 22, Walmart, headquartered in Bentonville, also earned a spot among Arkansas' top employers. And rounding out the list at No. 25 was J.B. Hunt Transport Services, headquartered in Lowell. That's a remarkable concentration of nationally recognized employers in one region. What Does This Mean for Northwest Arkansas Renters? Grocery chain pulls more products as Salmonella-linked recall grows.

Grocery chain pulls more products as Salmonella-linked recall grows. Published August 15, 2026 5:13 PM CDT NatureBest recalls more than a dozen items sold in H-E-B grocery stores and linked to a jalapeño recall. (Source: FDA) The brief. * * NatureBest recalled more than a dozen products sold at H-E-B stores. * The items were sold under the NatureBest label and H-E-B's own brand name. * The recalls are the latest involving a fresh jalapeño recall that has affected several grocery chains and restaurants. The number of foods affected by the recall on fresh jalapeños keeps growing higher as more and more products are identified. On Friday, H-E-B added nearly 20 new items to its list of recalled foods that were sold in its stores. Big picture view: The latest additions were produced by NatureBest Precut & Produce and were sold in Texas and Louisiana under the NatureBest name, as well as the H-E-B brand. According to the statement posted on the Food and Drug Administration's website, they were distributed between July 3, 2026, and August 5, 2026. NatureBest says it has stopped distributing any of the affected products. The backstory: The recall comes after NatureBest was alerted by Coast Citrus Distributors that they may contain jalapeño peppers that could be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause fever, diarrhea, and vomiting, among other symptoms, in healthy people and more serious infections in children, seniors, or those with weakened immune systems, the statement explained. Why you should care: At least 345 people across 27 states have become infected with Salmonella that is believed to have come from the peppers, the FDA said. Many of those cases were linked to restaurants that included Qdoba and Chipotle, both of which made changes in response to the recall. The FDA has provided assurances that they do not consider either chain a risk. Several other grocery chains, including Albertsons, Kroger, Target, Walmart, and Whole Foods have been swept up by the recalls because they sold downstream products that were made with the jalapeños. Dig deeper: Like those other grocers, H-E-B had also previously recalled other items that were made with the peppers. In its latest recall notice, the company included a full list of those products as well. Dig deeper: Anyone who has the recalled NatureBest products should not consume them and can return the items to wherever they were purchased for a full refund. The Source: Information for this article was taken from the FDA, H-E-B, NatureBest, and previous coverage. This story was reported from Orlando.
