Requirements
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Previous customer service and/or patient experience is preferred in the job specifications.
  • Experience in a position involving high interaction with the public and efficient communication skills is required.
  • Ability to lift, position, push, and transfer patients and equipment, including pushing and pulling 100 or more pounds.
  • Ability to remain calm and work concisely in highly demanding circumstances.
  • Normal vision, with or without corrective lenses, is required.
  • Ability to hear and speak suitably for normal conversation is required.
  • Ability to wear protective equipment such as gloves, masks, gowns, and goggles is required.
  • Ability to follow patient safety, infection control, standard precaution, and hazardous-waste procedures is required.
Responsibilities
  • Complete transportation requests promptly, correctly, and efficiently.
  • Transport patients as assigned by the computer-based system or by a supervisor, lead person, or director.
  • Use the proper Ticket To Ride form when moving patients between inpatient nursing units and ancillary departments.
  • Administer patients’ oxygen and meet oxygen-equipment needs during transport.
  • Immediately inform the supervisor or lead person of response-time delays and unclear or potentially problematic issues.
  • Respond immediately to pages from the director, supervisor, or lead person.
  • Return equipment found throughout the hospital facility to the appropriate department.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, customers, supervisors, and staff.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-services and remain knowledgeable about their content.
  • Maintain proprietary and confidential information and comply with hospital and departmental standards of conduct.
  • Follow operational guidelines in the supervisor’s or lead person’s absence.
  • Use proper body mechanics and follow patient identification, patient safety, and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and employees.
  • Report risk-management and operational concerns to the supervisor.
  • Provide timely, high-quality service to patients, families, and staff in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Pick up trash and notify housekeeping or maintenance of deficiencies.
  • Keep equipment clean and in good working order; retrieve abandoned equipment and tag malfunctioning equipment before removing it from service.
  • Contribute to hospital and department performance-improvement goals.
  • Provide age-appropriate services and communicate using age-appropriate techniques for infants, children, adolescents, and geriatric patients.
  • Involve family members or significant others in decision-making related to services provided.
  • Support laboratory operations through specimen processing, answering telephone inquiries, and preparing and sorting specimens for testing.
  • Transport laboratory specimens between Saint Louis University Hospital and Cardinal Glennon.
Desired Qualifications
  • Basic computer proficiency and the ability to learn and use Epic and other electronic medical record systems.
  • Previous laboratory, specimen-handling, healthcare, or customer-service experience.
  • Knowledge of specimen-processing workflows and specimen-integrity best practices.
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development credential, or 10 years of work experience.
