Gold Coast defence firms secure $1.77M to boost local manufacturing and skilled jobs

The Queensland Government has awarded $1.77 million to two Gold Coast defence manufacturers through its Sovereign Industry Development Fund. Arkeus, relocating from Victoria, will receive $1.48 million to establish optical radar system production at Ormeau, creating 59 jobs. The company manufactures sensors helping drones navigate and respond. Rhino Linings will receive $285,000 to install equipment at Molendinar for producing BattleJacket protective coatings, previously sourced from the United States. The coatings protect military vehicle fuel tanks from ballistic damage by self-sealing when breached. Both projects aim to reduce reliance on overseas suppliers and strengthen Australia's defence supply chains. Arkeus plans twentyfold manufacturing capacity growth, whilst Rhino Linings targets Australian defence customers with potential Asian exports. Equipment installation begins in 2026, with full operations expected by late 2027.

Arkeus opens Queensland advanced manufacturing facility backed by state funding. July 13, 2026 Arkeus has opened a new advanced manufacturing facility in Ormeau, Queensland, aimed at increasing production of AI-powered defence sensing systems, with the expansion supported by AUD$1.48 million from the Queensland Government's Sovereign Industry Development Fund (SIDF). The new facility, officially unveiled this week by Queensland Deputy Premier The Hon. Jarrod Bleijie MP and Member for Coomera Michael Crandon MP, is expected to increase the company's manufacturing capability by 20 times. According to Arkeus, the site will produce AI-powered sensing systems designed for autonomous defence platforms used by Australian and allied defence customers. Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Deputy Premier Bleijie said the investment forms part of the state's broader strategy to strengthen sovereign industry capability. "Our AUD$180.6M Sovereign Industry Development Fund is about building sovereign capability across the state," Bleijie said. "We've already announced some great projects in defence, biofuels, and biomedicine, but this one I'm particularly excited about. AUD$1.48M has been awarded to Arkeus - it is about building sovereign capability for drones and sensors and for Queensland to stamp its authority in the defence space around the globe." Arkeus said the Ormeau facility follows its AUD$25 million Series A funding round in May 2026 and forms part of the company's plans to establish advanced manufacturing capabilities in both Queensland and the United States to support sovereign defence capability and accelerate system delivery. Founder and CEO Simon Olsen said the facility would support the company's next phase of growth. "Arkeus is just getting started on the possibilities for defence technology that can help drones and other unmanned craft to see, understand and act," Olsen said. "Thanks to SIDF, we are establishing this advanced manufacturing facility on the Gold Coast that will include new production and repair capabilities for our specialised AI-powered optical sensors. Our new Ormeau facility will allow us to significantly scale manufacturing, meet growing demand from Australian and U.S. defence agencies, and support the next stage of Arkeus' growth." Olsen added that the company sees "enormous opportunities to strengthen Queensland's sovereign capabilities in advanced manufacturing for the defence sector, to grow export markets, and create skilled local jobs." According to Arkeus, the expansion has already resulted in the recruitment of four senior Queensland-based employees, including Global Vice President of Manufacturing Andrew Sim. The company said it plans to grow its Queensland workforce by up to 50 employees over the coming years. Arkeus said its core technology includes hyperspectral optical radar systems that capture multiple layers of visual data simultaneously, enabling artificial intelligence to detect, classify and track objects across different operating environments, including conditions where conventional sensing systems may be less effective. The company said its systems are designed to process data in real time, supporting faster decision-making without relying on remote communications or external processing.

Arkeus' advanced manufacturing expansion into Queensland has been enabled by the state government's support of $1.48 million via the Sovereign Industry Development Fund (SIDF). The unveiling was also attended by Arkeus personnel and member for Coomera Michael Crandon. The new Arkeus defence technology facility is expected to build AI-powered sensing systems that serve as the eyes and brains of autonomous platforms for Australian and allied defence customers. It will increase Arkeus' manufacturing capability by 20 times. Arkeus has already hired four senior Queensland-based team members, including the global vice president of manufacturing, Andrew Sim, and plans to grow the Queensland team by up to 50 members in the next few years. "Our AU$180.6m Sovereign Industry Development Fund is about building sovereign capability across the state," Deputy Premier Bleijie said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "We've already announced some great projects in defence, biofuels and biomedicine, but this one I'm particularly excited about. "$1.48 million has been awarded to Arkeus - it is about building sovereign capability for drones and sensors and for Queensland to stamp its authority in the defence space around the globe." The Ormeau facility marks an important stage in Arkeus' growth. Following a Series A funding of AU$25 million in May 2026, Arkeus is establishing advanced manufacturing capabilities in Queensland and the United States to support sovereign defence capability and enable faster delivery of systems into operational use. "Arkeus is just getting started on the possibilities for defence technology that can help drones and other unmanned craft to see, understand and act," Arkeus founder and chief executive Simon Olsen said. "Thanks to SIDF, we are establishing this advanced manufacturing facility on the Gold Coast that will include new production and repair capabilities for our specialised AI-powered optical sensors. "Our new Ormeau facility will allow us to significantly scale manufacturing, meet growing demand from Australian and US defence agencies, and support the next stage of Arkeus' growth. "We see enormous opportunities to strengthen Queensland's sovereign capabilities in advanced manufacturing for the defence sector, to grow export markets and create skilled local jobs." Arkeus' core technology, including hyperspectral optical radar systems, captures multiple layers of visual data simultaneously, allowing AI to detect, classify and track objects across any domain, day and night, and even in degraded or contested environments where traditional sensors struggle. Rather than simply showing operators what a scene looks like, Arkeus' systems extract meaning from data in real time, enabling faster, more accurate decisions at the edge without reliance on vulnerable communications links or remote processing. Australian defence deals set to soar in next 12-24 months - Dealspeak APAC.

Australian defence deals set to soar in next 12-24 months - Dealspeak APAC. 5th June 2026 02:37 PM By Louise Weihart and Manu Rajput Australian defence deals are set to soar in the next 12-24 months as surging global defence budgets give rise to motivated buyers and higher valuations in what is emerging as a sellers' market. The US has a USD 1.5tn military budget for 2027, the UK plans to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by April 2027, ReArm Europe is unlocking some EUR 800bn in defence investments, and the Australian government has committed AUD 425bn (USD 305bn) to the sector over the next decade. According to Mergermarket data, Australian defence M&A recorded nine deals, worth USD 361m, so far this year, the highest deal count and second-highest volume on Mergermarket record, also surpassing the full year number since 2023. There were three funding rounds, also the highest on Mergermarket record, valued at USD 274m, with the largest being Gilmour Space Technologies' January AUD 217m Series E, led by the Australian government's National Reconstruction Fund Corp (NRFC) and superfund Host-Plus. Autonomous systems producer Advanced Navigation raised AUD 158m in a March Series C, with investors including Airtree Ventures, Quadrant Private Equity (PE) and NRFC. Sensing system builder Arkeus secured AUD 25m in a Series A in May, with investors including QIC Ventures, R+ VC, Folklore Ventures, and Dyne Ventures. On the buyout front, PE firm Next Capital sold engineering contractor Eptec's defence division to Washington, DC-based PE firm Arlington Capital Partners for about AUD 150m, accounting for the one buyout so far this year, compared to none in 2025. Cross-border cranks up It's no surprise that Eptec attracted an international bidder, and many more cross-border deals can be expected, not least from PE buyers, partners at global M&A advisory firm Oaklins said at Australian member firm Henslow's 2026 Defence Conference in Sydney last month (27 May). PE firms, including in Europe and the UK, where defence was previously avoided due to strict ESG mandates, will provide M&A impetus, as will defence primes and neo primes as they acquire technology to stay relevant amid rapidly changing global battlefields. The AUKUS trilateral security partnership between Australia, the US and UK will unlock deal potential between the three signatories and makes Australia an attractive destination for offshore buyers, said Oaklins UK-based partner Anthony Platt. We can expect to see more US investment over the next year or two, according to US-based partner Ken Fukumoto, pointing to Australian defence tech Sentient, which was acquired by San Diego, California-based Shield AI in 2024 for an undisclosed sum, as a prime example of what US buyers want. French companies were also motivated buyers for Shield AI but "the US won", noted France-based partner Raphael Petit. What to watch Anything drone-related, defence electronics, radar optronics, space, cyber, battlefield awareness, autonomous systems, advanced manufacturing, and supply-chain resilience are hot targets, which bodes well for companies that recently spoke to Mergermarket. Defense robotics company Breaker could raise USD 25m-USD 35m in 12-24 months. Drone tech Mirragin and defence software developer Ocean Software are seeking strategic investors. Aerospace manufacturer AMSL Aero is looking to tap offshore investors for its 'Series B+'. It's also worth watching what's next for companies that recently raised capital like hypersonic testing firm Hypersonix Launch with its AUD 46m last October, and listed IT company Harvest Technology with its AUD 6.5m last month to expand into defence and autonomous systems. With Israeli defence drone supplier KTEK Aerosystems seeing its share price rise by more than 100% on its 18 May listing day, next to watch are Australian drone makers Boresight, due to list on 10 June, and Carbonix, which told Mergermarket an IPO is an attractive option. Early Australian PE defence investors - like Five V with its 2021 investment in cybertech Penten, Pemba with its 2022 investment in defence tech Aurizn, and Alceon with its 2024 investment in engineering company Shadbolt - could see rewards given the sellers' market and that valuations are increasing, currently to higher double-digit multiples, according to the Oaklins partners.

QIC Ventures leads A$25M Series A for Arkeus to scale next gen autonomous defence capabilities.

QIC Ventures leads A$25M Series A for Arkeus to scale next gen autonomous defence capabilities. Media releases Private Equity Published 17th May, 2026 Australian defence technology company Arkeus has raised A$25 million in Series A funding to scale deployment of its AI-powered sensing systems and establish advanced manufacturing operations in Queensland. Led by QIC Ventures, the raise saw participation from new investors R+ VC, Folklore Ventures and Dyne Ventures, with continued support from existing investors Main Sequence Ventures, Salus Ventures and Beaten Zone. Arkeus develops sensing systems designed specifically for AI-driven autonomy, combining hyperspectral imaging with onboard artificial intelligence to enable platforms to detect, classify and track objects in real time, directly on the platform. Unlike traditional systems that rely on human interpretation or remote processing, Arkeus enables platforms to understand their environment, even in degraded or contested conditions. As demand grows for more capable intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) technology, Arkeus has already deployed systems with both the Australian and US Departments of Defence, and is integrated with major drone manufacturers including AeroVironment, Textron, Tekever and Boeing subsidiary Insitu. Arkeus co-founder and CEO Simon Olsen said the Series A positions the company to move quickly as defence forces shift toward autonomous, sensor-driven operations. Modern defence is moving toward systems that can operate and make decisions in real time, without relying on constant human input or vulnerable data links Simon Olsen - Arkeus Co-founder & CEO. "Queensland Investment Corporation has built Arkeus from the ground up for that environment. Its systems process and interpret data on the platform itself, allowing autonomous systems to act in real time without relying on vulnerable communications links. "This capital allows us to scale manufacturing and get capability into the field faster, while expanding across a broader set of platforms and customers. Establishing a manufacturing and engineering base in Queensland gives us the ability to scale alongside our customers and support long-term defence programs from within Australia and across the Pacific." QIC Ventures Investment Director Nick Capell said the investment reflects a structural shift in how defence capability is being built and funded. Queensland Investment Corporation is seeing defence move toward software-defined, autonomous systems where sensing and decision-making at the edge are critical Nick Capell - QIC Ventures Investment Director. "Arkeus sits directly in that shift, delivering a step-change in how platforms perceive their environment and how quickly that translates into action. "At QIC Ventures, our focus is on backing technologies that matter strategically, not just commercially. Arkeus is a clear example - a company with global demand that can be scaled from Australia, while strengthening sovereign capability at the same time." A key component of the deal is the establishment of a Queensland-based manufacturing and sustainment facility, alongside a local team supporting the Australian Defence customers in the region. Arkeus has already secured the Australian Army Wide Area Airborne Surveillance Program aimed to enhance the sensing capabilities of its Tactical UAS fleet. It has also won contracts with the United States Department of War following competitive evaluations against US incumbents. In a U.S. Department of Defence competitive evaluation, Arkeus' sensing systems demonstrated the ability to detect targets up to eight times further than existing optical systems in degraded visual conditions.
