Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Perform general patient workups in the clinical area.
  • Complete diagnostic testing on patients and participate in patient and family education.
  • Coordinate surgical scheduling for physicians and schedule diagnostic procedures ordered by physicians.
  • Assist physicians with office-based procedures and other specialty-specific duties.
  • Obtain and record patient histories, ocular status, medical history, medications, and allergies.
  • Obtain and record visual acuity measurements for adults, children, illiterate patients, and infants.
  • Measure and record spectacle prescriptions, base curves, optical centers, and spectacle prisms using manual and automated devices.
  • Perform tonometry to measure intraocular pressure.
  • Perform and record refractometry using retinoscopy, manifest techniques, and over-refraction.
  • Administer dilation and anesthetic drops.
  • Perform brightness acuity testing.
  • Perform and record color vision screening and diagnostic testing using Ishihara color plates, D-15, and Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue testing.
  • Assess and document pupillary functions, including light and accommodation responses and specified abnormalities.
  • Conduct and record formal and informal visual fields, including confrontation, Amsler Grid, Tangent Screen, Humphrey automated perimetry, and Goldmann manual perimetry.
  • Evaluate neuro-ophthalmology patients, perform directed diagnostic testing, and record findings such as saccadic eye movements, tangent screen testing, corneal sensitivity, and pupil abnormalities.
  • Perform and record corneal assessments using keratometry, corneal topographical mapping, pachymetry, slit lamp, biomicroscopy, and corneal diameter measurements.
  • Perform diagnostic ultrasonography using A-mode.
  • Apply and remove eye patches and ocular dressings as directed by the physician.
  • Assist with minor ocular surgical procedures.
  • Perform ocular biometry measurements.
  • Clean examination and procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Order, sort, store, and restock supplies; monitor medical supplies and equipment functionality.
  • Report deficiencies or problems to the manager.
  • Inspect the working environment for compliance with company policies, procedures, governmental regulations, and standards.
  • Maintain a sterile environment, recognize breaches in technique, and take corrective action.
  • Follow hand hygiene protocols.
  • Complete required audits and report deviations or inefficiencies.
  • Work with physicians and staff to maintain efficient office workflows.
  • Facilitate and triage patient-care telephone calls, determine follow-up, and relay critical information to physicians.
  • Learn and use all functions of the electronic medical record.
  • Schedule visits using office protocols or physician consultation.
  • Maintain the surgery schedule, ensure appropriate information is provided to pre-admission testing and surgery, and complete required authorizations.

  • Current certification as an ophthalmic technician is preferred.
  • Ability to work successfully under stressful conditions and adapt to varying workloads and assignments.
  • Ability to make sound independent judgments based on scientific principles and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Ability to listen carefully and understand physician needs.
  • Ability to work with the general public and function effectively in a busy clinical environment.
