- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- A valid G Class driver's license with a good driving record is required.
- Three years of related work experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial or industrial repair, maintenance, or outdoor landscaping is preferred.
- Experience with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario is highly preferred.
- High-level computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint, are required.
- Successful completion of training in traffic control methods, first aid, transportation of dangerous goods, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, and job-related occupational health and safety topics is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing, with coworkers and supervisors.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
- Ability to follow policies and procedures consistently.
- Ability to understand written, oral, and diagram-based instructions and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to work with hand and power tools, traffic control devices, and mobile equipment such as tractors, graders, mowers, sweepers, augers, and other equipment used for surface and right-of-way maintenance and repair.
- Ability to recognize hazards in routine and non-routine tasks and adjust work to avoid loss, injury, or accidents.
- Ability to communicate safety instructions to coworkers.
- Ability to focus on personal safety and surroundings while using tools and equipment, driving, or operating equipment.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the job.
- Maintain contracted assets, including roadways, medians, signs, guardrails, fences, bridges, tunnels, and vegetation, according to contract standards and conditions.
- Remove snow and ice using snow-removal and/or sanding equipment during the winter season.
- Maintain and repair highways and other surfaces, including signs, guardrails, fences, lighting, potholes, striping, reflectors, litter, and debris during the summer season.
- Operate vehicles and equipment for surface and right-of-way maintenance and repair, including repairing and maintaining slopes, berms, culverts, drains, and vegetation.
- Set up and remove traffic control measures.
- Transport crews and equipment to work sites.
- Participate in emergency response rotations, including overtime, evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed.
- Create, modify, and sign off on traffic control plans in accordance with Book 7.
- Ensure traffic plans are set up and removed properly in accordance with Book 7.
- Deliver and complete daily Toolbox Talks, job starts, and Job Hazard Analyses.
- Supervise, inspect, and report daily work completed by operators.
- Verify that work has been completed properly.
- Ensure timesheets are accurate and submitted daily.
- Report all incidents to the supervisor.
- Report equipment and facility damage to the supervisor.
- Lead by example and encourage coworkers and supervised employees to use personal protective equipment correctly and follow safety rules.
- Take appropriate corrective actions, including initiating disciplinary action, to enforce personal protective equipment and safety rules within the supervised area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Three years of related work experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial or industrial repair, maintenance, or outdoor landscaping.
- Experience with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
