Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a closely related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in hardware product development, embedded systems, or electronic device design, ideally involving outdoor, industrial, or ruggedized devices.
  • Expertise in schematic capture and printed circuit board layout using electronic design automation tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, or Eagle.
  • Proficiency in three-dimensional computer-aided design modeling using tools such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360 for enclosure design, mechanical fitment, and rapid prototyping through 3D printing or computer numerical control machining.
  • Programming skills in C or C++ for microcontrollers such as ARM Cortex, ESP32, or STM32, with familiarity with RS485, Modbus, SDI-12, RS232, I2C, SPI, UART, and analog-to-digital converter protocols.
  • Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power-profiling tools to debug, optimize, and long-term test ultra-low-power, solar-harvesting systems.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the hardware development cycle from initial concept through field deployment.
  • Design custom circuits, engineer rugged enclosures, and develop low-level embedded systems that capture environmental data.
  • Design sensor node solutions that respond to site, user, maintenance, material, connectivity, and power requirements while minimizing physical presence and operational burden.
  • Architect, capture schematics for, and lay out custom printed circuit boards for environmental monitoring, low-power telemetry, and specialized sensor integration.
  • Design, prototype, and test rugged, weatherproof, IP-rated enclosures capable of withstanding submersion, extreme heat, and ultraviolet exposure.
  • Write clean, optimized, low-level C or C++ firmware for microcontrollers to handle sensor interfacing, power management, and local data logging.
  • Work with designers, ecologists, hydrologists, and civil engineers to translate monitoring goals into hardware, sensor, and form-factor requirements.
  • Conduct lab bench testing, rapid prototyping, and field trials to validate hardware reliability, calibration, and power efficiency before scale deployment.
  • Interface with printed circuit board fabrication houses, component distributors, and manufacturing partners to oversee small-to-medium batch production runs.
  • Own and maintain hardware documentation, including design criteria, circuit diagrams, product data sheets, schematics, bills of materials, enclosure and mounting details, testing procedures, installation requirements, commissioning documentation, and hardware-related specifications.
Desired Qualifications
  • Deep understanding of battery-powered and solar-harvesting power management strategies for long-term remote deployments.
  • Prior experience working with environmental sensors, including water quality probes, soil moisture sensors, weather stations, or gas sensors.
  • Exposure to integrating wireless modules such as LoRa, Cellular/LTE-M, or Bluetooth Low Energy at the hardware level.
  • Experience with aesthetics, interaction, visibility, safety, and site integration for systems placed in occupied environments.
