Petco reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 results, posting positive comparable sales for the second consecutive quarter. The pet retailer generated $1.5 billion in sales and $122 million in adjusted EBITDA, which included a $6.8 million net tariff refund. The company voluntarily prepaid $75 million in debt on 1 September, citing solid results, healthy cash generation, and confidence heading into the second half of the year. Chief Executive Officer Joel Anderson highlighted the company's progress on its "Phase 3 Reach for the Sky" strategy. A key milestone during the quarter was the relaunch of Petco's customer membership programme, Petco Perks, which simplified point redemption to increase member engagement. Anderson noted the changes were well received during pilot testing.
Applied Industrial Technologies, a distributor of industrial products and services, is being highlighted as a profitable stock worth watching, with a trailing 12-month operating margin of 11.1%. The company, formerly known as The Ohio Ball Bearing Company, supplies products ranging from power tools to industrial valves across various industries. Meanwhile, two companies are facing headwinds. Petco is struggling with weak same-store sales trends and a high debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 6×, whilst Bristow Group, which operates helicopter transport services for offshore oil and gas platforms, has shown only 6.1% annual revenue growth over the past five years and maintains a low free cash flow margin of 0%.
Petco's revamped loyalty programme, Petco Perks, cost the retailer millions in its second quarter after customer redemptions significantly exceeded projections. CEO Joel Anderson said on Wednesday's earnings call that the impact reached "mid-single-digit millions", causing sales to remain flat year over year instead of growing 0.3% as forecast. The relaunched programme, which began in late June, removed friction from the previous version. Members now earn 10 points per dollar spent on most products and 30 points per dollar on private label brands, with 1,000 points worth $1. Petco has since implemented guardrails on redemption velocity. Anderson said the company believes peak redemption volumes have passed and expects the programme to support long-term growth starting in 2027.
Petco reported flat second-quarter sales of $1.49 billion, meeting analyst expectations, but delivered a significant earnings beat with non-GAAP profit of $0.15 per share versus estimates of $0.07. Adjusted EBITDA of $122.2 million exceeded forecasts by 10.9%. CEO Joel Anderson attributed the performance to improved customer engagement following the relaunch of the Petco Perks membership programme, though increased point redemption temporarily pressured net sales. Same-store sales were flat year on year. The company guided third-quarter revenue to $1.47 billion, in line with expectations. Management highlighted growth in companion animal categories and resilience in consumables as stabilising factors. Petco operates 1,377 locations, down from 1,388 a year earlier. The company plans to continue investing in veterinary services, fresh food partnerships, and personalised marketing to deepen customer loyalty whilst managing supply chain cost pressures.
