About the role
Join Uber’s Marketplace team as a Senior Backend Engineer and drive innovation across a wide range of services that are core to our Marketplace. Our teams are instrumental in enhancing Uber’s marketplace logistics, maps, experimentation frameworks, membership, autonomous mobility & delivery services, location, routing, and earner incentives.
You will contribute to the development of systems that optimize real-time marketplace dynamics to provide seamless experiences for millions of users globally. Your role will involve working at the intersection of technology and data, using these to solve complex challenges in mobility and delivery.
About the Team
We are hiring for multiple teams across the Marketplace organization for Mobility and Delivery. As a Backend Engineer, you will drive the implementation of a variety of products and systematic improvements while working closely with cross-functional folks and other engineers. You’ll work closely with product, operations, data science, and engineering teams throughout the company. You will make an impact in the real world using exciting and new technology.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years hands-on experience with backend development
- Grit, drive and a deep feeling of ownership.
- Expertise in system design and architecture, with the ability to lead the development of complex, scalable systems.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in driving projects and mentoring junior engineers to improve team performance and code quality.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience in cross-functional teams and a track record of delivering results through partnerships
- A focus on impact, with a history of making strategic decisions that align with business goals and deliver measurable outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Domain knowledge in areassuch as autonomous vehicle system, logistics, map, experiment, search, ranking, optimization, loyalty and membership, etc.
- Knowledge of marketplace dynamics, including supply-demand matching, pricing, and incentive systems, particularly in autonomous or transportation-related domains.
- Experience with optimization techniques, such as linear programming, dynamic programming, or heuristic algorithms, and their application in large-scale systems.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the design and development of complex, highly scalable systems, ensuring the marketplace operates efficiently at scale.
- Drive technical projects from inception to completion, collaborating with cross-functional partners such as product managers, data scientists, and operations teams to deliver impactful solutions.
- Develop and optimize algorithms to solve challenging problems in autonomous vehicle routing, matching, pricing, and incentive systems, directly influencing marketplace performance.
- Balance technical trade-offs between speed, performance, and quality, making informed decisions that align with both business goals and engineering best practices.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, sharing your expertise to enhance team velocity and the quality of technical output.
- Drive best practices in engineering processes to enhance performance, reliability, and security.
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.
For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.
