EU approves $448M German subsidy to Sanofi for insulin production security

The European Commission has approved a €400 million subsidy from Germany to pharmaceutical company Sanofi to maintain its Frankfurt insulin production site. The Commission stated that without this aid, Sanofi would close the German facility, reducing insulin supply security across the European Economic Area. The subsidy aims to compensate Sanofi for costs related to a service of general economic interest, strengthening insulin supply resilience for German patients. In return, Sanofi must build a new insulin factory in Frankfurt by 31 December 2032 and guarantee minimum annual production of 1.1 tonnes until 2042. Sanofi is among the world's leading insulin producers. The company announced in 2024 a €1.3 billion investment in Frankfurt to construct a new complex replacing existing facilities.
