Requirements

  • The ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions is required.
  • Good verbal and writing skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical, receptionist, dispatching, and admitting or discharge duties in support of the assigned patient care department.
  • Greet patients and perform admitting functions upon their arrival.
  • Complete admitting, transfer, and discharge information in the computer.
  • Locate and assign beds and communicate admission, transfer, and discharge information to the appropriate departments and physicians.
  • Disassemble patient records after receiving a discharge order and organize, maintain, assemble, and break down patient and department records.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments, laboratory work, X-rays, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Arrange patient transportation and dispatch patient care personnel for transportation requests.
  • Complete discharge summaries, laboratory requisitions, and other departmental forms accurately.
  • Fax discharge summaries to designated areas.
  • Enter written physician orders into the EPIC system.
  • Generate Kardex and Medical Admission Records from Merlin and distribute documents appropriately.
  • Phone consultations to other services and maintain communication with patient care departments to support patient needs.
  • Answer telephone and patient intercom calls, route messages accurately, and dispatch appropriate personnel.
  • Welcome visitors and provide information about patient or department routines in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Prepare patient identification bands and name tags.
  • Review printed orders for stat, laboratory, and diagnostic tests and advise the registered nurse of stat orders.
  • Record laboratory results reported by telephone and immediately alert the registered nurse to abnormal results.
  • Maintain office-supply stock levels and compile statistical or unit activity data as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or secretarial school is preferred.
