Rivian warns select R2 owners not to DC fast charge their suvs, an investigation has been announced.

Rivian warns select R2 owners not to DC fast charge their suvs, an investigation has been announced. Rivian R2 owners were informed that the charge port and charge header assembly might overheat due to poor connectivity, and DC fast charging is not recommended Published: 21 Aug 2026, 18:04 UTC - By: Photo: Rivian Rivian debuted R2 deliveries earlier this year, and is now ramping up production to meet demand. However, some unlucky owners are already affected by what seems to be the vehicle's first major problem. Rivian announced to several owners that the high-voltage distribution system might be faulty, and warned them not to use DC fast chargers until the vehicle is inspected. Customers who ordered an R2 were happy that Rivian could ramp up production faster than anticipated. The performance is even more impressive considering that a tornado hit the R2 production line in April. Rough estimates indicate that Rivian might have delivered up to 3,000 R2 crossovers in the second quarter. However, like every new vehicle model, the Rivian R2 might have its teething problems. While ownership experiences have been mostly positive, with no major complaints, the R2 is not perfect. A recent visit to a detailing shop revealed that the R2 might be the best Rivian model in terms of build quality. However, issues like unresponsive buttons and questionable materials were flagged by the detailing expert. These are not even worth mentioning, especially as other R2 owners could not confirm the quality issues. However, Rivian has been aware of a much bigger problem, this time affecting the high-voltage distribution system. The EV startup already contacted owners believed to be affected by this issue, and is now scheduling their vehicles for inspection. So far, the problem seems limited, and it's probably caused by defective components from a specific lot. Rivian has contacted owners whose cars are built using the flawed components, and one of them shared the work done at Rivian service centers to remedy the problem. Until the inspections are completed, owners are advised to avoid charging their vehicles at a DC fast charger. During the inspection, the technician checks the DC fast charging connector-to-header joint for gaps and thermal abnormalities. If a fault is discovered, the service center removes and replaces the DCFC Header Assembly and the DCFC Connector Assembly. According to an August 19 conversation between an R2 owner and a service center technician, Rivian raised this to an engineering investigation. So far, there's no official filing with the NHTSA regarding the problem, and no customer complaint has been sent to the agency. Rivian's own recall information page does not have an entry for the R2. This means that the only way of finding out if your car is affected is a phone call from the Rivian Service Center or contacting the carmaker directly. Thankfully, Rivian was able to catch this defect early on and remedy affected vehicles before anything bad happens. A loose connector or header in the high voltage line could lead to overheating. This could potentially start a fire if temperatures reach dangerous levels during charging. Liked the article? Follow Autoevolution to see more articles from autoevolution in your Google feeds.

Tesla holds 61.5% of US EV market as registrations climb back above 100K in June

US electric vehicle registrations rose above 100,000 in June 2026 for the first time since the federal tax credit expired in September 2025. However, registrations fell 11% year-over-year to 100,515 vehicles, marking the market's ninth consecutive annual decline, according to Mobility Global data reported by Automotive News. Tesla maintained its dominant position with 61,813 registrations, up 8% year-over-year, capturing 61.5% of the market. The Model Y alone accounted for 42% of all US EV registrations. Rivian moved into second place with 4,535 registrations, overtaking Hyundai despite a 1.7% year-over-year decline. Commercial van registrations jumped 43% to 2,061 units, representing nearly half of Rivian's total. The company began delivering its R2 model in June. Hybrids continue attracting buyers away from full EVs, maintaining pressure on the segment.

Rivian stock down 22% despite strong R2 SUV launch and path to profitability

Rivian Automotive's stock has fallen 22% this year despite recent progress in its electric vehicle business. The company delivered 12,194 EVs last quarter, generating $1.66 billion in revenue, up 27% year-over-year. The EV maker swung from a $206 million gross loss in Q2 2024 to a $179 million gross profit in Q2 2025. Rivian recently launched its R2 battery-electric SUV, priced under $60,000, which it expects to become a major profit centre. The company is targeting annual production capacity of over 400,000 R2 vehicles plus its upcoming R3 model. Analysts project full-year revenue growth of 38.4%, accelerating to more than 59% next year. Rivian focuses exclusively on electric pickup trucks and SUVs designed to resemble traditional combustion-powered vehicles, targeting the US market where these vehicle types dominate sales.

Rivian announces strategic expansion into United Kingdom market.

Rivian announces strategic expansion into United Kingdom market. American EV manufacturer Rivian confirms its entry into the UK, positioning its upcoming R2 and R3 models to challenge the established European market. Rivian Automotive has officially confirmed its expansion into the United Kingdom, marking a significant milestone in the company's international growth strategy. The California-based electric vehicle manufacturer, known for its focus on adventure-oriented SUVs and trucks, aims to introduce its brand to British consumers as it shifts its production focus toward more accessible, mass-market platforms. Strategic focus on the R2 and R3 platforms. The move into the UK market is anchored by the anticipation surrounding the R2 and R3 model lines. While the company's flagship R1T and R1S have established a premium footprint in North America, the upcoming R2 mid-size SUV and the smaller, versatile R3 crossover are designed specifically to meet the spatial and infrastructure demands of European roads. Industry analysts suggest that these models are critical for Rivian's global scalability, as they offer a lower price point and more compact dimensions compared to the brand's earlier offerings. Adapting to European Automotive standards. Entering the UK requires significant logistical and engineering adjustments. Beyond the transition to right-hand drive configurations, Rivian must navigate the competitive landscape of the European EV market, which is currently dominated by both established legacy automakers and aggressive new entrants from Asia. According to market data from 2026, the demand for high-performance electric SUVs in Britain remains robust, yet consumers are increasingly prioritizing range efficiency and software integration - areas where Rivian has historically invested heavily. Market positioning and competitive landscape. The decision to enter the UK is not merely about volume; it is a calculated effort to elevate the brand's prestige in a market that values sophisticated design and off-road capability. Automotive experts note that by launching with the R2 and R3, Rivian avoids the direct comparison with larger, less maneuverable American trucks, instead positioning itself as a premium lifestyle brand that bridges the gap between rugged utility and urban convenience. Projected impact on the European EV sector. Market observers will be closely monitoring how Rivian's proprietary charging network and software-defined vehicle architecture perform under European regulatory conditions. The company's ability to establish a reliable service and support infrastructure will be the primary variable determining its long-term success. As the UK continues its transition toward a fully electric fleet, Rivian's entry is expected to intensify competition among mid-size electric crossovers, forcing existing manufacturers to accelerate their own innovation cycles to maintain market share.

Rivian loses $833M per quarter but edges out Stellantis in market cap despite 5.4M vehicle gap

Rivian's $23 billion market cap edges out Stellantis's $20 billion valuation despite stark differences in their operations. Rivian expects to sell between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles this year whilst burning through $833 million per quarter. In contrast, Stellantis sold approximately 5.4 million vehicles last year. In the second quarter, Rivian generated $1.1 billion in revenue and lost $833 million. Stellantis posted roughly $50 billion in revenue with a modest $335 million profit during the same period. The valuation gap reflects investor optimism about electric vehicles' future, similar to Tesla's $1.1 trillion market cap versus Ford's $55 billion. However, EVs represent only 5% of new US car sales this year, making the premium increasingly difficult to justify.
