Damen Folla and Zeabuz unveil smart docking system for aquaculture at Nor-Fishing event. Published: August 13, 2026 Reading time: 2 min. On 18 August, at Nor-Fishing in Trondheim, Damen Folla and Zeabuz will unveil a new smart docking system designed to help aquaculture operators avoid collisions with objects in the water, thereby reducing downtime and repair costs. The ZeaWatch Docking Assist system combines a range of technologies to provide the crew with a comprehensive overview of infrastructure, both above and below the waterline. Development of the system began in May this year when Damen Folla CCO Stig Rune Nørbech contacted Zeabuz CEO and CTO Øyvind Smogeli. He wanted to explore whether it would be possible to create a system similar to a parking assist system used in the automotive sector for aquaculture workboats. "Every year, there are many incidents at fish farms with vessels colliding with infrastructure. This often results in significant downtime, with vessels having to go ashore for costly repairs - not to mention the damage caused to the infrastructure," says Stig. His call came at an opportune moment; Zeabuz was putting the finishing touches to such a system for an electric sightseeing vessel. "The technologies behind the solution are well proven," states Stig. "What is unique here is its application. In the automotive industry, and in previous maritime cases, the objective has been to detect objects above or on the waterline. In the aquaculture industry, however, much of the infrastructure lies below the waterline and is, therefore, not visible to vessel operators." To address this challenge, Zeabuz has developed a solution that combines cameras and 4D radar technology with sonar and GNSS. The system builds a dynamic map of the vessel surroundings both above and below the waterline, and presents this information in a birds-eye map view with distance measurements and a "traffic light" warning system. This allows operators to detect objects and monitor their proximity to the vessel as it approaches. The smart docking system is the latest result of the cooperation between Damen Folla and Zeabuz. Also on display in Trondheim will be the ZeaFalcon - a 7-metre HDPE Damen vessel integrated with a Zeabuz autonomy system. ZeaFalcon's autonomy system comprises multiple capabilities, including autonomous navigation, collision avoidance, remote command and control, and autodocking. The vessel will be demonstrating its capabilities in the harbour during the event. Operations will also be livestreamed to a screen in the exhibition hall. "Automation is only going to grow in importance for the aquaculture industry," explains Øyvind. Already we are witnessing the effects of crewing challenges. As operations move farther from shore and into more exposed locations, we expect to see increasing use of larger and more complex vessels. "Our approach to autonomous technology and navigation support is not aimed at displacing the crew. What we are seeking to do is rather to develop solutions that support the operators, making their work safer, more efficient and more productive."

The deal was brokered by maritime advisory firm IntelliMar. The vessel, with a deadweight of approximately 3,850 tonnes, is built by Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards Group. It is designed for European short-sea bulk operations and incorporates a range of features aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions. These include battery-hybrid propulsion capable of enabling fully electric sailing, shore power connectivity, the ability to operate on B100 biodiesel, wind-assisted propulsion via Econowind VentoFoils, and an optimised hull design. After the Bundeswehr frigate project F-126 was discontinued, the defense company is therefore urgently dependent on new customers. Rheinmetall hopes for naval orders from the USA after the end of the Bundeswehr's F-126 frigate project. On Monday, the naval division of Germany's largest defense group presented a new frigate concept with the GMF140. Rheinmetall wants to offer the approximately 140-meter-long warship "in the context of a procurement project in North America," according to a company statement. For the potential US order, Rheinmetall plans to integrate US radar systems into the GMF140. The group is urgently dependent on new customers in the naval sector after the F-126 project was discontinued. At the end of June, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) halted further work on the F 126 due to escalating costs. Previously, Rheinmetall had bought its way into the naval business with the takeover of NVL, formerly the naval division of the Lürssen shipyard. Under the then Dutch general contractor Damen, NVL was involved in the F-126 project and was supposed to take it over after the Defense Ministry had withdrawn the contract from Damen due to delivery delays and increased costs. Rheinmetall adjusted the project status and submitted an updated offer to the Defense Ministry. The cost for the six frigates would have been around 18 billion euros. Instead of 2028, as originally promised by Damen, the frigates could only have been handed over to the Bundeswehr in 2032.

Damen launches green methanol-ready hybrid CSOV.

Damen launches green methanol-ready hybrid CSOV. Damen Shipyards Group has launched the second in a series of two Commissioning Service Operations Vessels (CSOV) 9020 for Ta San Shang Marine (TSSM), a joint venture between Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan and Ta Tong Marine of Taiwan. The vessels will support construction and maintenance activities at offshore wind farms in Taiwanese waters. When delivered in early 2027, the CSOV 9020, to be named TSS Challenger, will join the Damen-built TSS Cruiser, in the company's fleet. Damen is constructing the vessel in Ha Long, Vietnam. Damen's CSOV 9020 is designed in line with the stringent requirements of the offshore energy sectors. The vessel's hull form ensures high sea-keeping and stability, providing comfort for the up to 120 personnel on board. The optimised hull design results in lower fuel consumption. This, combined with the CSOV 9020's hybrid diesel-electric propulsion arrangement, offers a significant reduction in emissions. To ensure the vessel's continued relevance in the years ahead, the CSOV 9020 is further prepared for future operation on (green) methanol. Thomas Röwekamp, Damen Regional Sales Director Asia Pacific, said: "We are pleased to have reached this latest milestone in the construction of these two vessels for TSSM. The CSOV 9020 draws on years of experience in the European offshore wind industry. The capabilities of the vessel have been tailored and fine-tuned to support the rapid development of the Asian market.
