Barnes & Thornburg appoints seasoned law firm executive Buck Owen as chief operating officer.

Barnes & Thornburg appoints seasoned law firm executive Buck Owen as chief operating officer. Veteran legal industry operator brings deep experience in law firm strategy, operations and innovation Barnes & Thornburg announced today that Buck Owen has joined the firm as chief operating officer. Based in Washington, D.C., he will work with firm leadership to drive strategic objectives and lead initiatives that support Barnes & Thornburg's continued national growth and operational efficiency. Owen has over 20 years of experience in professional services operations at law firms and financial services organizations. He most recently served as chief operating officer of a top Am Law firm, overseeing all business and practice operations. "Buck is an exceptional executive and an outstanding addition to our leadership team," Barnes & Thornburg Managing Partner Andrew J. Detherage said. "He has spent years at the highest levels of law firm operations with a strong focus on strategy. His experience integrating practices and offices, driving technology adoption and aligning operational excellence with strategic growth is exactly what Barnes & Thornburg needs as we continue to grow and evolve. We are in a strong position as a firm and having Buck in this role positions us to execute on our strategy with even greater speed and precision." In his prior tenure, Owen played a central role in that firm's expansion, leading the integration of new practices and offices, streamlining operations across a domestic platform, and spearheading the incorporation of generative AI and other advanced technologies into talent development and client service delivery. Prior to serving as COO, he held the role of chief practice officer at the same firm, where he partnered with practice and sector leaders on strategic planning, performance evaluation, and investment decisions, and served as COO of the firm's transactional practices. "Barnes & Thornburg is one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing firms in the country, and the opportunity to help shape its next chapter was one I could not pass up," Owen said. "What Andy and the firm's leadership have built - the record financial performance, the national expansion, the investment in talent and technology - is a remarkable foundation. My goal is to ensure that our operational infrastructure and business services capabilities are not just keeping pace with that growth but actively accelerating it. I am energized by what this firm is becoming, and I am proud to be part of it." Owen's appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Barnes & Thornburg. After reporting a banner financial performance in 2025, the firm made one of the legal industry's largest lateral moves in recent memory with the acquisition of a 39-lawyer public finance and infrastructure group. The firm also added a 12-lawyer insurance recovery team in April. So far this year, more than 100 lawyers have joined Barnes & Thornburg, resulting in the firm topping the list for Q1 2026 lateral partner hiring, according to Pirical. Owen's arrival follows the recent addition of Emily Landry as its chief onboarding and integration officer, further strengthening Barnes & Thornburg's leadership team and positioning the firm for continued expansion. Barnes & Thornburg bolsters Tax and Insurance Recovery capabilities with addition of six lawyers in Atlanta and Florida.

Barnes & Thornburg bolsters Tax and Insurance Recovery capabilities with addition of six lawyers in Atlanta and Florida. Barnes & Thornburg - a national law firm with more than 850 lawyers in 26 markets - announced today that five partners and a senior associate joined the firm's Tax and Insurance Recovery practices in the firm's Atlanta and Florida offices. Austin Bersinger, Matthew Hall and David Sandefer joined the firm's Insurance Recovery Group, while Jeffrey Luechtefeld, Sean Gannon and John Nail joined its Tax practice. Bersinger, Luechtefeld, Gannon, Nail and Sandefer are all based in Atlanta, while Hall is located in Florida. "Austin, Matt and David bring a deep coverage experience that complements our very strong coverage practice. Jeff, Sean and John add a tax controversy practice to provide additional expertise to our clients," said Managing Partner Andrew J. Detherage. "Their arrival highlights our ongoing investments in high-caliber talent to meet growing client demand and deepen our offerings across key practice areas and jurisdictions. Given the spate of top-tier partner additions in the past three months, 2026 is already proving to be a banner year in expanding the firm's national platform." Gannon, Luechtefeld and Nail bring significant experience in tax controversy and litigation, having represented clients in numerous IRS examinations, administrative appeals, and complex disputes before the U.S. Tax Court and federal courts. Collectively, they have advised Fortune 500 companies, private equity firms, and closely held businesses on high stakes matters involving transfer pricing, intangible asset valuation, tax credits, and other technical issues. Gannon and Luechtefeld also previously served as special trial attorneys with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel and later held leadership roles in Big Four tax controversy practices. "This new group reflects the strength of the firm's continued momentum nationwide and in Atlanta," said John T.L. Koenig, office managing partner in Atlanta. "In this fast-growing market, clients increasingly expect deep knowledge and seamless access to national resources. All of these new lawyers are highly regarded practitioners who can now deliver on both fronts, positioning us to better serve clients in Atlanta and beyond." The move comes on the heels of Barnes & Thornburg adding a distinguished 12-lawyer Insurance Recovery team in multiple offices - including partner Rachel Hudgins in Atlanta - underscoring the firm's continued investment in high-demand practice areas and its broader national platform. The firm also recently added M&A partner Princess Fuller in Atlanta. "We are excited to join a firm that is clearly investing in developing a national tax platform, particularly amid today's rapidly evolving regulatory environment," said Luechtefeld. "The firm's impressive bench of attorneys and immensely collaborative approach provide us with the foundation we need to take our own practices and client service to the next level. We look forward to growing together alongside our new colleagues." Bersinger and Hall represent clients in complex insurance recovery and commercial litigation matters, including coverage disputes and claims strategy. Their experience spans all stages of disputes, from pre-claim counseling and negotiations through trial and appeal, and includes handling complex coverage denials, bad faith claims, and related business litigation. Throughout their careers, they have secured substantial recoveries for clients and successfully defended against multimillion-dollar claims. In addition, they regularly advise leadership teams on risk management, policy review, and claim presentation across a range of industries. "The firm's existing insurance recovery practice and its nationwide reach made this a compelling opportunity for us," said Bersinger. "We are thrilled to join this group and continue to build with them." About Barnes & Thornburg. Barnes & Thornburg guides Smart City Locating in strategic partnership with Owner Resource Group.

Barnes & Thornburg guides Smart City Locating in strategic partnership with Owner Resource Group. Barnes & Thornburg acted as legal advisor to Smart City Locating, a U.S.-based provider of property locating services, in a strategic partnership with Owner Resource Group (ORG), an Austin, Tex.-based private investment firm. The companies announced on April 16, 2026, that Smart City secured an outside investment from the affiliates of ORG that will support the company's next phase of growth. The investment is structured as a recapitalization, with existing management retaining significant ownership and continuing to lead the business. "Taking on outside investment is a major milestone for Smart City - the first in our company's history," Smart City CEO Cassie Brown said in the announcement. "From the beginning, it was clear ORG was the right partner. They were thoughtful, curious, and deeply aligned with how we think about building a company. ORG doesn't just invest in businesses; they invest in culture, mission, and purpose, which is exactly how we've built Smart City." Brown founded Smart City in 2013 in Austin to help fill vacancies for leading property managers across the U.S. As the industry leader in property locating services, it now operates in nine markets across five states. Founded in 2008, ORG partners with industry-leading businesses looking for a growth partner and management teams hoping to establish or increase their ownership. ORG's affiliates have invested in numerous companies across the manufacturing, distribution and business services sectors. The Barnes & Thornburg team included partner Reid Johnson and associate Haylie English. Related professionals.
