JOB SUMMARY:

Jefferson County is seeking well-qualified, motivated Engineering Drafters to support civil engineering and construction projects by producing accurate maps, plans, and technical drawings using specialized drafting and mapping software. Employees in this role help ensure reliable project planning and communication by researching existing infrastructure, maintaining detailed records, and organizing both digital and physical files. Engineering Drafters collaborate with various stakeholders to provide technical information on the placement of sewer pipes, pump stations, roads, bridges, and other county infrastructure. They are also responsible for comparing proposed drawings and plans with 'as-built' documents to ensure compliance with permits and adherence to approved submissions. Engineering Drafters typically work under the guidance and review of a professional engineer.

Jefferson County: $38,126 - $59,155

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

Option A:

• Technical school or college-level coursework in Drafting and 2 or more of the following areas: CADD Software, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Surveying.

Option B:

• Work experience using CADD software to research and investigate existing infrastructures and assist in developing plans for new construction.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered by the hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

• Professional certification in CAD or GIS software (e.g., Autodesk Certified Professional, ESRI ArcGIS certification).

• Associate’s degree or higher in Drafting, Civil Engineering Technology, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), or a related field.

• Drafting experience related to civil engineering or public infrastructure projects.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

• Provides customer service by researching and investigating existing structures, maps and documents, and assisting in developing plans in order to communicate accurate information to colleagues and other individuals including drafters, engineers, architects, supervisors, consultants and the general public.

• Produces maps and drawings by using drafting tools and software and mapping software in order to accurately depict county infrastructure for construction/maintenance purposes and general documentation purposes.

• Maintains hard-copy and computer-based filing system by manually organizing hard copies and electronic copies of maps and drawings in order to ensure data is properly documented and easy to access.

• Produces plans, blueprints, and drawings by using drafting tools and software in order to assist with planning civil engineering and construction projects.

• Estimates construction costs and quantities of materials needed for plans and projects by reviewing plans and drawings, calculating areas/volumes/slopes etc., and determining the types of materials that should be used in a project based on details of the work to be completed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily conducted indoors in an office setting, but may also include visits to external construction worksites. Work involves the regular use of standard office equipment including a computer, phone, copier, etc. May be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic or hazardous construction equipment when working outdoors.
