Requirements
  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at Nevada State.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Possess an eagerness to guide and support a diverse group of fellow students.

Responsibilities
  • Help mentees feel welcome and connected to the Nevada State University community while assisting them in adjusting to college life by explaining campus policies, procedures, and available services and addressing common first-year concerns.
  • Facilitate the transition of mentees and their guests to our campus and community through the introduction of campus services, academic resources, and campus involvement opportunities at New Student Orientation and Scorpion Smart Start.
  • Organize and participate in campus events, information sessions, and recruitment activities to promote the STAR program and engage potential participants.
  • Provide support to mentees through the coordination and facilitation of monthly social, educational, and service programs.
  • Serve as a positive role model in areas of academic success, campus involvement, and professional behavior while demonstrating effective study habits, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Meet one-on-one with assigned mentees to discuss academic goals, personal challenges, and provide ongoing encouragement and accountability.
  • Maintain accurate records of mentoring interactions, track mentee progress, and complete required reports and assessments.
  • Identify when mentees may need additional support beyond peer mentoring and make appropriate referrals to professional staff or campus resources.
  • Be available as an ongoing resource for, and maintain regular contact with mentees through one-on-ones, email, text, phone calls, and social media outreach.
  • Maintain confidentiality with any shared information.
  • Provide input on program effectiveness and suggest improvements based on mentee interactions and outcomes.
  • Work effectively with other STAR Peer Mentors, staff, and campus partners to ensure coordinated support for students.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by Director as needed such as assist with program evaluation, data collection, and special projects.
