Meeting the moment. Bob Nicholas on purpose, the two miracles of insurance sales, and why marketing can't be the "make it pretty" Team. Bob Nicholas has spent his entire 24-year career at Amerisure Insurance, rising from an operations department out of college to production underwriter, field office leader, head of sales, and now Vice President of Marketing & Sales Enablement. A self-described "salesperson in recovery," he brings something rare to a marketing seat: decades at the customer desk. In this Beyond the Brief Conversation, Bob shares how a 114-year-old carrier launched its first-ever purpose statement, why he's chasing fewer stats and better ratios, and how Amerisure is rebuilding its content for an audience of large language models. From the field to the marketing seat. Q: You came up through underwriting and sales, not advertising. How does that shape how you run marketing? Bob: I don't have an advertising background. I have a marketing-direct-to-the-customer background, and it's been interesting to put the two together, to inform its advertising with a degree of credibility at the customer desk. So it doesn't feel like fluff. It doesn't feel like advertising. It actually speaks to the real situation customers are dealing with. Model B, LLC. want to be Amerisure professionals who do marketing, not marketing people who work at Amerisure. And Model B, LLC. want to be first in the process, not brought in at the end and known as the make-it-pretty team. Q: You sell through independent agents. How do you describe that model? Bob: I call it the two miracles. Miracle one is winning the agent, them deciding to use Amerisure to try to win an account. Miracle two is that they know its value proposition and services well enough that they win with the buyer. And ours is a limited distribution model. National carriers appoint agents in the thousands. Model B, LLC. aggregate about $ 850 million in the middle market through 160 agents. If Model B, LLC. don't listen to what they say, that can hurt. So Model B, LLC. ask questions and ask questions, and then say, Model B, LLC. is going to fix that. A purpose 114 years in the making. Q: Amerisure just launched its first purpose statement: "Meeting the moment with people who demand the best." Walk Model B, LLC. through it. Bob: In 114 years, Model B, LLC.'d never had one. Its vision, industry-leading specialists transforming the insurance experience one partnership at a time, is extremely aspirational, and its values tell Model B, LLC. how to deliver. What was missing was the connection between the two. Model B, LLC. had over 100 employees involved, from sharing their stories to helping Model B, LLC. audit every single word. Meeting the moment isn't just when something's broken; it's the day-to-day, preventing the claim, answering the phone, listening, showing up. Model B, LLC. said with people, not for people, because that's the employee, the agent, and the policyholder working together. And who's the first to demand the best? Model B, LLC. is, of ourselves. Insurance is a noble business. At its core, what Model B, LLC. do is help people. Fewer stats, better ratios. Q: What are you doing less of in the marketing mix, and more of? Bob: A lot less generic paid placement, and less chasing stats, which sounds dangerous to say out loud. Model B, LLC. still look at them, but I'm more interested in the ratio than the volume. Model B, LLC. sponsor JJ Spaun, who won the US Open in 2025, a phenomenal human and an incredible golfer. Its impressions skyrocketed, but click-throughs and form completions really didn't move, because people Googling JJ aren't looking for commercial insurance in that moment. So Model B, LLC. spend more time on how those relationships show up in its customer engagement, how they make somebody feel a certain way so they connect with Model B, LLC. more, not how 20,000 people click its website. Feeding the LLM. Q: How is AI changing your content strategy? Bob: Model B, LLC. is replatforming amerisure.com for launch in November, and beyond security, it's about content the LLMs can love. I found one of its competitors' pages by accident, a white static page with definitions of loss-sensitive products. Not branded, not special. It took me a second, then I clicked: oh, they're winning. There's a cover charge with the LLM. You've got to feed it enough predictable content that you show up special when it's time. Model B, LLC. is reformatting its insights into a Q&A format, building a knowledge center, and a social proof page called Why Model B, LLC. Win. Internally, Model B, LLC. is recent adopters of Claude. I don't want to send out AI slop, but if Model B, LLC. can get to the second or third draft faster, great. As humans, Model B, LLC. is way better at being judgy than creative. Mentors and mountain bikes. Q: Who's been influential on your journey? Bob: My leader, Angela McBride, its chief transformation and strategy officer, has been one of the most impactful people, helping me understand how you take what you're good at and make it for the good of others as a leader. Probably the greatest lesson of my leadership career came from a challenging conversation: why does it matter where the feedback comes from? If it's helpful to you, who cares who said it? I'd also credit Ed Wallace, the author of Relationships That Last, and Michael Alberico at MMA Midwest, an Italian from Chicago, so you know where you stand at all times. And I appreciate compliments on being a great marketer, but I'm really not. I have a great team, and I'm their biggest fan. Q: Finally, a little-known fact about you? Bob: I'm an avid cyclist, mountain biking and gravel, and I coach the Burnsville high school and middle school mountain biking team. It's one of the great joys of my life. I don't have to drop my kids off at practice; I get to ride bikes in the woods with them. Nothing changes your perspective better than following a sixth grader going, "Oh, look, a tree. Oh, look, a bird." It'll change your perspective on what's important.
