Requirements
  • One to two years of museum or gallery experience.
  • Experience installing a wide variety of artworks, including digital media works.
  • Experience with condition reports.
  • Knowledge of the design and construction of museum exhibits, lighting concepts and systems, safety regulations, practices and procedures, and Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
  • Knowledge of art-handling procedures for two- and three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights.
  • Knowledge of standard tools, practices, and methods used in painting, rough and finish carpentry, and cabinet work.
  • Experience using and applying materials such as lumber, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to interpret working drawings.
  • Ability to participate effectively as a member of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with museum, hotel, and restaurant staff, the general public, and representatives from other museums.
  • Ability to explain and carry out methods and procedures relating to the handling of irreplaceable art objects.
  • Ability to pass Department of Transportation-required physical examinations necessary to acquire a medical examiner's certificate from a certified medical examiner listed on the National Registry.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare, install, and transport museum exhibitions and safely handle artworks in the collection, including incoming and outgoing loans.
  • Install and de-install artworks and exhibitions.
  • Install lighting and labels or vinyl.
  • Construct packs and crates based on the needs of individual works, in collaboration with the Collections Manager to determine appropriate packing materials and requirements.
  • Assist with retrofitting previously constructed crates.
  • Pack and unpack artworks.
  • Pull works for exhibition and stage them in an efficient and organized manner.
  • Assess the condition of artworks and test them before exhibitions under the supervision of the Collections Manager and/or Registrar.
  • Update, format, and maintain crate labels, object transfer forms, and bills of lading for collection artworks and incoming and outgoing loans under the guidance of the Registrar and Collections Manager.
  • Move crated or packed works on and off trucks.
  • Maintain the museum's tools, hardware, and other equipment.
  • Travel to install and de-install exhibitions for periods ranging from one to two days to two weeks.
  • Drive heavy-duty trucks over long distances and work occasional weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Communicate with the museum team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Preferred experience driving a 26-foot truck and forklift.
