Requirements
  • A degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience successfully estimating conceptual and hard-bid construction projects for a general contractor.
  • A strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and familiarity with site conditions and construction phases.
  • Design-build experience on relevant project types.
  • Experience in value engineering.
  • A valid state-issued driver's license, vehicle insurance meeting Alston Construction liability coverage requirements, and a satisfactory driving record.
  • OSHA 10-hour certification.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
Responsibilities
  • Perform daily estimating duties using discretion, independent judgment, and professional skills to resolve issues and minimize company risk.
  • Provide thorough, accurate, and competitive cost estimates through all design phases, from concept through construction and permit documents.
  • Prepare cost estimates and scopes of work for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems from conceptual design through completed construction documents.
  • Identify value-engineered alternatives involving construction methods, materials, schedules, and design.
  • Determine proposal specifications and scopes of work by reviewing drawings and attending or managing bid and preconstruction meetings.
  • Analyze and document cost data from historical projects, purchase orders, contracts, and cost reports for use in future estimates.
  • Provide design assistance and cost data regarding project feasibility to clients, design professionals, and the project team.
  • Prepare bid packages and provide leadership and coordination for bid solicitations and requests for proposals.
  • Develop scopes of work for subcontractors before and during bid solicitation.
  • Perform takeoffs across multiple trades to minimize construction cost risks.
  • Analyze subcontractor proposals for cost, scope, and completeness to determine work awards.
  • Identify and qualify new subcontractors to maintain sufficient qualified and financially sound subcontractor coverage.
  • Prepare preliminary project schedules during preconstruction and assist the Superintendent with the contracted schedule before construction.
  • Organize and lead the transition of the project cost estimate to the Preconstruction or Project Manager.
  • Assist the Preconstruction or Project Manager with pricing and negotiating owner and subcontractor change orders.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with prospective and current clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Advise the Preconstruction Manager, Preconstruction Director, or Vice President/General Manager about potential projects with existing or new clients.
  • Maintain detailed backup records for estimate figures, including assumptions made for conceptual designs.
  • Update and maintain the subcontractor and design consultant database.
  • Participate in applicable corporate meetings and forums.
  • Recommend improvements to business operations, processes, procedures, and best practices to increase client satisfaction, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
