Sandvik partners with Rio Tinto to integrate autonomous drilling systems across Australian mines

Sandvik has partnered with Rio Tinto to integrate its i-series surface drill rigs with Rio Tinto's Autonomous Drilling System. The collaboration will combine Sandvik's AutoMine automation technology with Rio Tinto's remote operations expertise to improve safety, productivity and system interoperability in open-pit mining. Development will be managed through Rio Tinto's Perth Operations Centre, beginning with testing at Sandvik's facility in Finland. Field trials will follow at Rio Tinto's Western Australian operations to evaluate performance against production targets. The project leverages existing autonomous infrastructure at Rio Tinto's iron ore sites and aligns with both companies' expansion plans, including Sandvik's recent copper mine equipment orders and Rio Tinto's $1.5 billion Quebec smelter expansion, due to complete by end-2026.
