Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: Maryland - Pharmacy Technician Student Permit or Pharmacy Technician License through Maryland Board of Pharmacy; Ohio - Pharmacy Technician Trainee License or Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License through Ohio Board of Pharmacy; Pennsylvania - Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy; West Virginia - Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association or two or more years of pharmacy specific experience must be obtained within 15 months of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Reading physicians’ orders, preparing medications, delivering medications, and ordering and delivering drug supplies for various patient-care units.
  • Reading physician's orders and preparing medication for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for all patient populations.
  • Understanding standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing and dispensing of medications.
  • Interpreting lists and using this information to replenish patient’s medications and deliver contents to patient care areas according to schedule.
  • Accurately preparing and delivering controlled substances to patients and maintaining all necessary records.
  • Taking inventory and analyzing medication supplies, replacing outdated or deteriorated medications; replacing depleted inventory.
  • Labeling products appropriately.
  • Performing arithmetic calculations for usual dosage determinations required in medication and solution preparation.
  • Performing initial check for prescribed doses for appropriateness based on weight and age.
  • Performing in accordance with departmental standards established for speed and accuracy.
  • Preparing and labeling prepackaged medications after determining usage patterns and prepackaging requirements; maintaining records related to this.
  • Maintaining inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
  • Answering telephone and channeling calls to appropriate person.
  • Ensuring pharmacy service areas and drug storage areas are kept clean and orderly.
  • Assisting in the training of pharmacy technicians.
  • Assisting with sterile preparation of intravenous room medications and general maintenance and cleaning of IV room.
  • Accurately preparing intravenous admixtures, including dilutions for pediatric patients, other injectable preparations, and sterile irrigating solutions using aseptic technique.
  • Accurately entering information related to parenteral admixtures and other injectable products in Pharmacy intravenous computer systems.
  • Managing controlled substances for the health-system.
  • Only pharmacists can perform certain duties: receiving oral prescriptions, consulting with prescribers, providing confidential patient information to health professionals or insurers, checking medications before dispensing, consulting with patients about prescribed medication use, and recommending over-the-counter medications.
Desired Qualifications
  • Associates degree or post high school education in a science field of study or graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association upon hire.
