Responsibilities
  • Prepare specimens for examination and perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Use automated equipment and instruments capable of performing tests simultaneously.
  • Perform and document start-up, quality control, calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures on instruments and laboratory equipment according to established laboratory protocols.
  • Assist with inventory management to maintain adequate supplies for patient testing.
  • Perform routine testing, prepare specimens, and evaluate test results.
  • Evaluate quality-control and calibration results for acceptability according to laboratory policies before reporting patient results.
  • Ensure the accuracy of test results, enter results into the laboratory information system, and report critical or urgent test results to providers according to laboratory policies.
  • Review work to ensure that work products are accurate, consistent with standards, and produced in a timely manner.
  • Participate in continuing education, complete competency assessments including proficiency testing samples, and participate in quality-assurance and quality-improvement projects.
  • Participate in evaluating new methods, procedures, and instruments and in developing technical standard operating procedures under laboratory leadership.
  • Follow laboratory safety, infection-control, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
  • Answer basic client questions and inquiries and seek assistance from co-workers, team leads, and supervisors when needed.
  • Assist in training staff and manage multiple priorities.

BIDMC wins NIH grant to study ADAMTS13 deficiency beyond rare clotting disorder. June 25, 2026 Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has received a USD 1.63 million NIH R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to investigate ADAMTS13 deficiency across a spectrum of thrombotic disorders - research that carries direct clinical relevance following the FDA approval of recombinant ADAMTS13 (Takeda's Adzynma) for immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP). The award funds two parallel lines of inquiry. The first leverages the Harvard TMA Research Collaborative (HTRC), a large single-center iTTP registry assembled by BIDMC investigators, to build predictive models for relapse, refractoriness, and mortality in iTTP patients. The grant also supports the first genome-wide association and admixture mapping studies in iTTP, aimed at identifying germline variants that may explain the disproportionate disease burden observed in certain populations. The second line extends beyond iTTP: using genomic and proteomic data from approximately 800,000 individuals in the UK Biobank and NIH All of Us datasets, the team will examine whether moderate ADAMTS13 deficiency - activity between 10% and 70%, versus the severe deficiency that defines iTTP - contributes to common macrovascular events including stroke, myocardial infarction, peripheral artery disease, and venous thromboembolism.
