View

National Health Foundation addresses health inequities in under-resourced Southern California communities. It focuses on four areas—housing, food access, built environment, and education—using programs and advocacy to change neighborhoods where people live, learn, work, and play. It differentiates itself by a place-based, multi-sector approach that targets root causes and empowers residents rather than only delivering health services. Its goal is to remove barriers to good health so residents can live longer, healthier lives regardless of income or background.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • The January 2026 $880,000 obesity grant validates NHF’s prevention model with public agencies.
  • The planned San Fernando Valley congregate meal site opens a new older-adult service line.
  • ETR partnership strengthens NHF’s youth programming with evaluation, helping future grant competitiveness.

What critics are saying

  • NHF depends on county, state, and USDA grants; one funding freeze disrupts operations.
  • Programs rely on Los Angeles public agencies; procurement delays can stall renovations and service launches.
  • If grant renewals weaken, NHF loses the cash needed to staff and expand programs.

What makes National Health Foundation unique

  • NHF combines housing, nutrition, and youth health programs across Los Angeles neighborhoods.
  • On April 2, 2026, NHF partnered with ETR to pilot YPAR.
  • In 2026, NHF won $880,000 for obesity prevention in Historic South Central Los Angeles.
