Michelin and Rockwell Automation partner to standardize manufacturing visualization and data collection. Collected by Bảo Hiền 03:44 PM @ Wednesday - 15 July, 2026 Michelin and Rockwell Automation have jointly developed a cloud-based software platform that unifies, contextualizes and displays data from multiple sources, delivering a standardized machine, workshop and plant supervision solution across the company's global operations. The challenge: a fragmented supervision landscape Michelin has long invested in modern manufacturing solutions to maintain efficiency, improve quality, cut waste and control costs. But like many large companies that have grown organically over time, its phased plant investments left it with a wide range of machines, technologies and services across its sites. While these systems all operate within the same integrated plants, differences in protocols, architecture and communication capability make unified management difficult, often forcing reliance on multiple human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that display similar information in very different formats. According to Xavier Hodasava, standards and IT/OT engineering lead at Michelin, the company set out to implement a standardized, centralized supervision solution that would make workshop and machine monitoring easier and more intuitive for all internal stakeholders - not just engineers working directly on the line. The visualization solutions previously used in the main control room each had their own screens and interface, with no tool to merge this information together or present it in a unified format that would make it easier to supervise an entire workshop. Michelin needed a system capable of ingesting operational data from multiple sources and delivering the right information, in the right format, to the right people, at the right time - not just locally, but at the plant level and beyond. Equally important was the ability to communicate seamlessly with the company's IT systems, as it works to converge IT and OT (operational technology) data to generate insights across the organization. The solution: a customized FactoryTalk Optix platform To create a single source of truth, Michelin worked closely with Rockwell Automation to design, develop and deploy a tailored version of the FactoryTalk Optix visualization and data acquisition platform - a multi-purpose HMI solution combining visualization, industrial IoT (IIoT) connectivity, edge deployment and data management capabilities. A key part of the partnership is a formal co-development and co-innovation agreement. As an early adopter of FactoryTalk Optix, Michelin's use case and substantial input are helping shape the platform's interoperability and development roadmap, with engineering teams from both companies working together to standardize user interfaces and build a consistent look and feel that can be rolled out globally. One notable outcome of the collaboration was the development of a native driver/connector for Michelin's Kafka-based messaging system. Since Kafka is widely used in IT as a messaging protocol, this driver is essential for seamless communication with Michelin's IT layer, particularly its enterprise software systems. Early results Hodasava said the company set an ambitious roadmap, but effective teamwork between the two companies has led to successful deployment at three plants - two in Spain and one in Italy - which can now monitor in-house-developed workshop equipment running on Rockwell Automation control platforms. Michelin is also using FactoryTalk Optix to monitor equipment from other manufacturers, such as conveyors and automated guided vehicles (AGVs), thanks to the platform's support for the OPC UA communication standard and its extensive library of third-party drivers. According to Hodasava, although the rollout is still at an early stage, the company is already responding faster to issues that could cause downtime, spotting anomalies earlier and taking corrective action more quickly thanks to more intuitive insights - improvements that translate directly into better uptime, a critical metric for any manufacturing plant. What's next The three pilot plants use a wide range of mixing technologies and control platforms, providing a solid foundation for further testing and development. Hodasava said the company's goal is to deploy FactoryTalk Optix across all Michelin factories, using the current work on mixing systems as a base for a broader global rollout. FactoryTalk Optix will also be applied in assembly and tire-building workshops, where Michelin engineers will be able to adapt it to each factory's specific process needs while maintaining a consistent look and feel. Michelin's extensive existing use of Rockwell Automation systems has simplified the development and deployment of the FactoryTalk Optix application. Hodasava emphasized that this was an important consideration, since global integration was always part of the roadmap - allowing the same tool and supervision processes to be extended down to the local HMI level, significantly cutting training time and simplifying deployment. Thanks to its use of smart objects, the software can also serve as an edge gateway, integrating with enterprise platforms for data collection. Reflecting on the collaboration with Rockwell Automation, Hodasava said both teams shared the same roadmap and goals throughout the project - from the earliest workshops with ASEM, Rockwell's specialist industrial computer and monitor division, through to the factory rollout. Even at this later stage, the two teams continue to work on new features and ideas in regular workshops that also include participation from Michelin's IT colleagues.
GAME-CHANGER! Michelin unveils smart tyre technology that could save African mines millions. ANNIE ALLEN African mining companies battling soaring operating costs may have found an unlikely weapon in their fight to boost profits, not underground machinery, but smart tyres that think. Global tyre giant Michelin has unveiled a cutting-edge real-time tyre intelligence system capable of predicting tyre failures before they happen, reducing costly downtime and potentially saving mining operators millions of dollars annually. The technology, known as MICHELIN MEMS 4, is being positioned as the centrepiece of Michelin's Better Mining strategy for Africa, where mines are grappling with rising fuel prices, ageing fleets, tighter budgets and mounting environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations. Rather than waiting for tyres to fail, the system continuously monitors tyre temperature, inflation pressure and GPS location, providing mine operators with live data that enables them to intervene before expensive breakdowns occur. According to Michelin, tyre failures are rarely sudden. Instead, warning signs build up over time - and MEMS 4 captures those trends long before operators would normally detect them. "Heat is what kills these tyres," said Amaury Vadon, Michelin's Vice President for Africa, India and the Middle East. "With MEMS 4, you can see which trucks are running hot and reroute them before you lose a tyre. For African mines operating remote fleets around the clock, that means less downtime and tyres that last significantly longer." For an industry where haulage accounts for more than half of total operating costs, even marginal improvements can translate into enormous financial gains. Michelin says extending tyre life by just 10 per cent, or improving haulage efficiency by one to two per cent, can generate savings worth millions every year across a large mining fleet. The French mobility company insists the solution goes far beyond tyre monitoring. Its Better Mining initiative combines digital technology, engineering expertise and operational support to help mines improve safety, increase productivity and reduce environmental impact simultaneously. One of the programme's most innovative features is Better Haul Road, which effectively transforms tyres into mobile road inspectors. Using data collected from trucks in operation, the system identifies rough haul roads, dangerous bends and areas where excessive truck cornering is accelerating tyre wear and fuel consumption. Mine operators can then repair problematic road sections, improve driver behaviour and reduce diesel usage - boosting productivity while lowering operating costs. Michelin says the technology is already demonstrating its value at Valterra Platinum's Flatreef Project, one of the world's largest platinum, palladium and rhodium developments. At the mine, dispatchers receive early warnings on trucks requiring attention before failures occur, allowing maintenance teams to schedule repairs around production instead of reacting to costly breakdowns. The result, Michelin says, is improved fleet availability, fewer operational interruptions and more informed management decisions based on real-time intelligence rather than guesswork. Industry analysts note that African mines are under unprecedented pressure to produce more while spending less, making predictive technologies increasingly attractive. With capital expenditure under strain and ESG expectations continuing to rise, mining companies are turning to digital tools that deliver measurable improvements without requiring major infrastructure investments. Michelin believes this shift marks the future of mining operations. "For mines looking to get more from what they already have, it's not about redesigning the pit," Vadon said. "It's about making smarter decisions with real-time data and shifting maintenance from reactive to predictive. Those small gains per truck add up fast across an entire fleet." As African mining companies race to improve efficiency in an increasingly competitive global market, Michelin is betting that the next major breakthrough in mine productivity won't come from digging deeper - but from listening to what their tyres have been trying to say all along. Michelin launches AI Assistant to give fleet operators instant access to operational insights. MICHELIN Connected Fleet has introduced an AI-powered assistant for UK fleet operators, enabling managers to retrieve real-time operational data through natural language prompts and simplify day-to-day fleet management. MICHELIN Connected Fleet has expanded its digital fleet management offering with the launch of an AI-powered assistant designed to help commercial vehicle and passenger transport operators make faster, data-driven decisions. Now available to UK customers through the MyConnectedFleet web platform, the new MICHELIN AI Assistantenables fleet managers to interrogate operational data using simple written questions, removing the need to manually generate multiple reports. The technology has been developed to provide immediate access to key performance information, allowing users to analyse fleet operations in real time through an intuitive conversational interface. Fleet managers can ask a wide range of questions, from identifying the most fuel-efficient drivers during a specific period to highlighting vehicles that require tyre maintenance or calculating monthly fuel expenditure across an entire fleet. Rather than navigating multiple dashboards, the assistant delivers answers instantly in either text or graphical formats, providing actionable insights based on live operational data. MICHELIN says the platform has been designed as a secure, closed environment, ensuring that customer information remains confidential while making complex fleet data more accessible. By simplifying access to operational intelligence, the company believes fleet managers can spend less time compiling reports and more time improving efficiency, reducing costs and enhancing overall fleet performance. The AI Assistant was developed in collaboration with several of MICHELIN Connected Fleet's largest customers, allowing its functionality to be shaped around the day-to-day challenges faced by transport operators. Sophie Foucque, Chief Executive Officer of MICHELIN Connected Fleet for Europe, Africa and Australia, described the launch as a natural progression of the company's customer-focused approach. She said the new assistant provides a more intuitive way for customers to interact with vehicle data while eliminating the need to create multiple reports, enabling fleet managers to concentrate on optimising operational performance rather than administrative tasks. The launch reflects growing confidence in artificial intelligence across the transport sector. Research commissioned by MICHELIN found that 78% of fleet managers believe AI will fundamentally transform fleet operations, with increasing expectations that intelligent digital tools will play a central role in improving efficiency, reducing operating costs and supporting better-informed decision-making. The introduction of the AI Assistant forms part of MICHELIN Connected Fleet's wider strategy to enhance digital fleet management through connected technologies that provide operators with faster access to the information needed to manage increasingly complex transport operations.
The installed base of fleet management systems in Latin America to reach 20.6 million units by 2030. According to a new research report from the leading IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the total number of active fleet management systems deployed in commercial vehicle fleets in Latin America was 10.2 million units in Q4-2025. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.2 percent, this number is expected to reach 20.6 million units by 2030. The Latin American fleet management market is relatively fragmented. The top-5 players in the region account for just over a fifth of the active units in the market, and the top-10 represent no more than a third of the total installed base in Latin America. In addition to local and regional solution providers, the region is increasingly served by international players - especially North American solution providers - seeking to expand the addressable market and maintain subscriber growth as the home markets become more mature. "Berg Insight ranks Gurtam and Geotab as the largest providers of fleet management solutions in Latin America", said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight. Active in the region since the late 2000s, Gurtam today works with a large number of partners offering its Wialon fleet management platform in a number of Latin American countries. Canada-based Geotab has been investing in Latin America for more than 15 years and the company now has several hundred thousand active subscriptions across all countries in the region. "The remaining top-5 solution providers in Latin America are MICHELIN Connected Fleet, Ituran and Powerfleet", continued Mr. Andersson. He adds that Michelin acquired Brazil-based Sascar more than a decade ago and MICHELIN Connected Fleet today also has some presence in other countries in the region. Israel-based Ituran is a major international player offering various telematics services, and Latin America accounts for the majority of the company's installed base of fleet management solutions. "US-based Powerfleet has a direct presence in the region through multiple offices and uses its network of partners to provide services in virtually all countries in Latin America", said Mr. Andersson. Other notable vendors include the Brazilian fleet management provider Mobi7 owned by the leading car rental company Localiza, the solution provider Hunter which stems from Ecuador and is active in a growing number of Latin American countries, as well as the white-label platform providers Navixy (SquareGPS) and RedGPS headquartered in the US and Mexico respectively. Colombia-based WideTech is also a top-10 player, having over 200,000 connected vehicles across many markets in Latin America. Solution vendors just outside of the top list moreover include the Mexican satellite tracking company Encontrack, the major Brazilian players Omnilink and Pósitron (Stoneridge), the white-label platform provider 3Dtracking, and Sitrack headquartered in Argentina. "Digital Communications Technologies (DCT), Trucks Control, Autotrac, Scania, Maxtrack, Wisetrack, 3S Tecnologia, Satrack, Cobli, Numaris, Location World, Scope Technology, Forward Thinking Systems, Samsara and VDO Fleet Brasil (AUMOVIO) are additional examples of significant solution providers. June 2026. Michelin guide has presented the new edition of the Croatia Guide for 2026, which once again confirms the growth and increasing maturity of the Croatian gastronomic scene. This year's selection includes a total of 112 recommended restaurants, including one restaurant with two Michelin stars, 13 restaurants with one star, 14 restaurants with the Bib Gourmand label and 84 selected restaurants. The most important news of this year's edition is a new Michelin star for the Harry's Piccolo Poreč restaurant, while Agli Amici Rovinj confirmed its status as the only restaurant in Croatia with two Michelin stars for the third year in a row. This year's edition of the Michelin Guide for Croatia also brings a clear signal of the growth of the domestic gastronomic scene: the number of restaurants with Michelin stars has increased from last year's 13 to 14, while the total number of restaurants in the Michelin selection has increased from 99 to 112. According to the Michelin inspectors, Agli Amici Rovinj has maintained an exceptionally high level of excellence, with the work of chef Emanuele Scarello and resident chef Simone de Lucca being particularly noteworthy. Michelin emphasizes that the gastronomic project in Rovinj is based on a high level of performance, a strong author's handwriting and a location that additionally shapes the overall guest experience. The new star for Harry's Piccolo Poreč is important for both Istria and Croatian tourism as a whole. The restaurant is run by chef Goran Hrastovčak, and Michelin describes the cuisine as a fusion of sea and land, Italy and Istria, tradition and contemporary gastronomic expression. The focus is on tasting menus and à la carte offerings, with dishes that stand out for their colors, aromas and harmony of flavors. Along with the new star, the Michelin Guide Croatia 2026 also brings three new Bib Gourmand awards. The selection includes Bistro Loora from Đakovo, Lulu Fusion Bistro from Osijek and Nuré from Zagreb. It is particularly interesting that two new Bib Gourmand awards went to Slavonia, which is an important signal for a region that is increasingly seeking its place on the Croatian gastronomic map. Bistro Loora in Đakovo is described by Michelin as a small and cozy bistro in the city center, with creatively interpreted local cuisine and a modern approach. Lulu Fusion Bistro in Osijek is highlighted as a small, contemporary bistro with creative cuisine that draws on Asian flavors, but uses local ingredients. Nuré in Zagreb is described by Michelin as a surprise in the very center of the city, a small bistro with just a few tables and a strong authorial signature of a Korean family with international fine dining experience. The award for young chef went to Marin Pleše from the Vila Rova restaurant in Malinska, the award for sommelier of the year went to Branimir Vukšić from Pelegrini in Šibenik, the award for new opening of the year went to Nuré from Zagreb, while the award for service went to the Monte restaurant in Rovinj. For Croatian tourism, this publication has a wider meaning than the gastronomic list itself. Michelin awards are not only awards for restaurants, but also a signal of the destination's maturity. They confirm how well local ingredients, original cuisine, wine, service, hotels and destination storytelling can be combined into a product of greater added value. It is particularly important that the Michelin map of Croatia is increasingly expanding beyond a few of the most famous gastronomic centers. Istria and Kvarner remain exceptionally strong, Zagreb confirms its urban gastronomic dynamism, Dalmatia maintains an important position, while the entry of Đakovo and Osijek into the Bib Gourmand selection opens up an important space for Slavonia. At a time when Croatian tourism is increasingly asking how to move from volume growth to value growth, gastronomy is one of the most concrete answers. Michelin does not solve destination development in itself, but it clearly shows where there is quality, ambition and potential to build tourism around an authentic product, not just around accommodation.
