Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A valid Ohio driver's license and a journeyman's certification are required.
  • Completion of a three-year University of Akron or other state-approved sponsored trade apprenticeship program, or at least eight years of mechanic trades experience, is required.
  • Ability to operate standard powered and non-powered tools and equipment, including hammers, saws, screwdrivers, drills, crowbars, jackhammers, core drills, circular saws, and hammer drills, is required.
  • Ability to perform trade-related mathematics involving fractions, ratios, and percentages is required.
  • Ability to read, write, and accurately follow oral, written, and graphic instructions is required.
  • Ability to work alone is required.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to use judgment to determine the correct course of action are required.
  • Ability to lift 80 pounds without assistance, bend, crouch, and climb ladders and scaffolding and work on rooftops is required.
  • Availability for a changing schedule and mandatory overtime or call-ins based on university needs is required.
  • All work performed as a University employee is expected to take place in Ohio.
Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled maintenance work on buildings, athletic fields, exercise equipment, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Serve as a team leader and train others in proper work methods and procedures.
  • Install, repair, and replace internal and external campus structures and facilities, including roofs, flooring, walls, windows, doors, and furniture.
  • Maintain, repair, and replace plumbing equipment; clear clogged drains; plan, inspect, and record maintenance concerns; and research and order repair parts and supplies.
  • Repair and install lighting, switches, and outlets; replace defective breakers and fuses; and perform general maintenance on electrical systems.
  • Follow scheduled preventive maintenance and perform daily observations of building systems, including ventilation, air conditioning, and heating equipment.
  • Change filters and belts, grease equipment, and troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed.
  • Perform masonry, concrete, painting, welding, and sheet metal work as needed.
  • Assist with ordering supplies and monitor buildings for potential problems.
  • Coordinate work with other trades.
  • Complete work, time, and material usage reports.
  • Provide guidance to nonexempt staff, including general scheduling, task assignment, and monitoring of work, as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Work the assigned Monday–Friday shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday off.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience leading others is preferred.
