FDA recalls blood pressure medications nationwide - here's how to check if yours is affected. 56 minutes ago The FDA has announced recalls involving commonly prescribed blood pressure medications, with thousands of bottles affected nationwide. If you take either of these medications, it's worth checking your bottle before taking your next dose. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says chlorthalidone tablets are being recalled after the manufacturer found they had "failed dissolution specifications." Testing raised concerns that the tablets may not dissolve the way they are supposed to, potentially affecting how the medication is absorbed by the body. The recall involves 25-milligram chlorthalidone tablets distributed across the United States by Risiong Pharma Holdings, Inc. According to the FDA, abou 11,460 bottles are included in the recall. The affected products are: 100-count bottles: NDC 64980-599-01, batch RISA24001 1,000-count bottles: NDC 64980-599-10, batch RISB24002 Expiration date: 04/2027 Chlorthalidone is a commonly prescribed diuretic used to help control high blood pressure. It can also be prescribed to reduce fluid retention. If your bottle matches the recall information, don't simply stop taking the medication on your own. Contact your pharmacy or prescribing healthcare provider and ask about a replacement or another appropriate option. The FDA has not yet classified this particular recall by severity. Another blood pressure drug is also being recalled The FDA also reported that Novartis voluntarily initiated a recall of Diovan (valsartan) 160 mg on August 4. The recall was announced by the agency on August 8. Valsartan belongs to a class of medications known as angiotensin II receptor blockers, or ARBs. These drugs work by blocking a substance that causes blood vessels to tighten, helping lower blood pressure. Valsartan is also used to treat heart failure and certain patients following a heart attack. The Diovan recall involves: Medication: Diovan (valsartan) 160 mg Quantity: 90 tablets Lot: AV5913C Expiration: 06/2027 Prescription: Rx only The medication was manufactured by Patheon Manufacturing Services in North Carolina and distributed by Novartis from its New Jersey operation. Why were the tablets recalled? The FDA says the Diovan recall was also triggered by "failed dissolution specifications." That doesn't necessarily mean the medication is toxic or contaminated. Instead, the concern is that the tablets may not dissolve according to the specifications used to ensure the drug is properly absorbed. The FDA classified the Diovan recall as a Class II recall on August 7. That's the agency's middle-level recall category. It generally means exposure to the affected product could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, while the likelihood of a serious health problem is considered remote. What should you do if you take one of these medications? First, check the bottle rather than assuming your prescription is part of the recall. The specific lot and expiration information matters. If your medication matches one of the recalled products, contact the pharmacy that filled your prescription or your healthcare provider for instructions and a possible replacement. And as with any prescription medication recall, don't abruptly stop taking a blood pressure medication without speaking with a healthcare professional first. Suddenly stopping certain medications can create its own health risks. If you've already taken medication from an affected lot and are experiencing concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
Kynexis pockets €97m to advance cognition-focused schizophrenia drug. The Novartis-backed biotech will now prepare for registrational studies on KYN-5356 in CIAS. Dutch biotech Kynexis has banked €97m ($113m) through an extended Series A funding round, which the company will use to support the mid-to-late-stage development efforts for its lead cognitive disorder asset KYN-5356. Backed by notable contributors like Novartis' venture arm and Forbion, Kynexis will use the funds to facilitate close-out activities for its US-based, proof-of-concept Phase II study of KYN-5356, which is currently evaluating the drug's adjunctive potential in cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia (CIAS). Kynexis expects to report topline results from this trial, which has enrolled around 150 adults with CIAS across 13 clinical sites, by the end of 2026. Alongside the Phase II trial, the funding will also help Kynexis prepare for its planned registrational trial on KYN-5356 in CIAS, while exploring the drug's potential in other cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Kynexis has developed its oral lead therapy, KYN-5356, as a potentially first-in-class option for CIAS - a disease which currently has no specifically approved treatment options. Designed as an inhibitor of a key brain enzyme, kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT-II), Kynexis claims that the drug can restore the signalling balance to receptors in the brain that are responsible for learning, memory and executive function. While the estimated prevalence of CIAS amongst the schizophrenic patient population varies significantly, a recent paper published in Schizophrenia Research: Cognition estimates that cognitive impairment is present in around 80% of patients with the condition. According to a 2026 real-world analysis, many patients with schizophrenia also display signs of CIAS, though most remain undiagnosed. Reinvigorating the schizophrenia treatment landscape. With a large portion of schizophrenia patients impacted by cognitive impairment and no approved therapies that can address such an affliction, there is a clear unmet need for the condition. While Kynexis' drug could hold the potential to fulfil some significant unmet needs in this space, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS)-owned Karuna's Cobenfy (xanomeline and trospium chloride) could also offer new hope for patients with CIAS, as a retrospective analysis of a Phase III trial previously revealed that patients taking the drug performed better on a cognitive test than those in the placebo group. Alongside this development, Orzyon Genomics is also conducting the Phase II EVOLUTION study (EUCT 2023-507372-42-00) on its selective LSD1 inhibitor, vafidemstat, for the treatment of CIAS. Meanwhile, Monument Therapeutics has also begun a Phase I/II study (NCT07226895) on its drug, MT-1988, in patients who are at high clinical risk of psychosis, which is looking at cognitive, clinical, biological and digital measures in patients after eight weeks of treatment. Novartis defeats UK court bid to invalidate blockbuster drug Entresto patent. By Thomson Reuters Aug 13, 2026 | 8:56 AM LONDON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Novartis on Thursday defeated a bid to invalidate its patent for blockbuster heart drug Entresto, with London's High Court rejecting a claim by Intas Pharmaceuticals' Accord Healthcare which was planning a generic rival. The ruling is a boost for Novartis as it navigates a busy period of patent expiries including for Entresto, which makes up about 10% of Novartis' sales. Novartis' European patent for Entresto, which treats heart failure and can also treat hypertension, expired in 2023 though it still has a so-called supplementary protection certificate which does not expire until 2028. Accord applied to the High Court for a ruling that Novartis' patent had always been invalid, while Novartis counterclaimed over the threatened infringement of its patent, with Accord intending to launch a competing product later this year. Judge Richard Meade said that "all the attacks on the patent fail". He ruled that Novartis' patent was valid while in force, its supplementary protection certificate was also valid and that Accord's intended product would infringe it. Novartis and Accord did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Meade also said that Novartis' patent was separately held to be valid after legal proceedings in the Netherlands. The company last year lost a bid in the United States to block a generic version of Entresto. (Reporting by Sam Tobin; Editing by Susan Fenton)
Blood pressure drug recalled nationwide, FDA announces. Kristine Gasbarre Qaderi Tue, August 11, 2026 at 4:02 AM PDT * Novartis voluntarily recalls its brand-name blood pressure drug Diovan due to quality flaw related to drug dissolution specifications. When a prescription drug is recalled, often it's a generic version that's being pulled from market. But this time, it's a name-brand blood pressure drug by a pharmaceutical company with its own recognizable name. In a report sent out Saturday, August 8, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Novartis had voluntarily initiated an August 4 recall on Diovan, the company's brand of valsartan, which the Mayo Clinic explains is an angiotensin II receptor blocker, "blocking a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten." The Mayo Clinic adds: "Valsartan is used alone or together with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension)... Valsartan is also used to treat heart failure and left ventricular failure after a heart attack." The FDA report states that the recall is due to "Failed Dissolution Specifications," a quality flaw which could possibly mean that testing revealed the drug doesn't dissolve as indicated for bodily absorption. How to tell if your prescription is affected. The FDA provided the following details in its report: * Diovan (valsartan) 160 mg (milligrams) * 90 tablets, Rx only * Lot: AV5913C * Expiration: 06/2027 * Quantity: not available The drug was reportedly manufactured by North Carolina-based Patheon Manufacturing Services and distributed by Norvartis's New Jersey office. What's the overall risk? The FDA was quick to determine a risk level for the Diovan recall, naming it a Class II event on Friday, August 7. This is the FDA's mid-tier severity level, which they define as "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."
