Requirements
  • A university degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, or another relevant engineering discipline is required.
  • At least 5 years of industry experience designing and developing satellite user or ground segment products and technologies is required.
  • Knowledge of C, C++, Java, and/or Python programming languages is required.
  • Knowledge of the main components of a ground segment and how they interact is required.
  • The candidate must be able to lead a small team of ground systems engineers.
  • Operations experience and the ability to interact with spacecraft operations engineers are required.
  • Knowledge of the project life cycle and acceptance procedures is required.
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards is required.
  • Experience designing and developing software is required.
  • Software product development experience spanning requirements, design, development, integration and testing, deployment, and maintenance is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own the Ground Segment system architecture, requirements, and technical baseline across all subsystems.
  • Lead requirements capture, derivation, allocation, traceability, and compliance management.
  • Define and lead Ground Segment integration, verification, and validation activities, including subsystem, system, simulation, and end-to-end testing.
  • Ensure coherence of interfaces, data flows, configuration, and releases across Ground Segment components.
  • Provide technical leadership through design reviews, technical governance, and acceptance of subsystem deliveries.
  • Support the development of Ground Segment systems and software, including mission control, mission planning, and ground station interfaces.
  • Define appropriate engineering and development approaches and support implementation, solution testing, and delivery.
  • Act as the technical interface to suppliers and key internal stakeholders across engineering and operations.
  • Support mission operations through troubleshooting, maintenance, training, and resolution of technical issues.
  • Produce and maintain engineering documentation and contribute to bids, planning, risk management, and technical reporting.
  • Manage 4–6 team members, including resolving work blockers, prioritising work, conducting appraisals, and conducting probation reviews.
  • Plan the technical work for team members and assign tasks based on their skill sets and abilities.
  • Hold overall accountability for the team’s technical output.
  • Identify skill-set and headcount or labour shortfalls in the context of current and upcoming team workload.
  • Work with the group manager to create plans addressing resource shortfalls through permanent hiring, temporary hiring, and/or outsourcing.
  • Support recruitment by reviewing CVs and conducting interviews for positions in the team.
  • Create plans addressing the development needs of existing team members.
  • Assist with technical engineering work when management capacity allows.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of experience managing a team of systems engineers.
  • At least 8 years of industry experience designing and developing satellite user or ground segment products and technologies.
  • Experience or knowledge of Scrum as part of a development team or as a Product Owner.
  • Experience with Mission Control Systems, preferably based on SCOS-2000.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft communication protocols and standards such as CCSDS, CAN, and SpaceWire.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

Space debris removal firms bet on satellite servicing as orbital junk grows

Space around Earth is growing dangerously congested with defunct satellites and debris, prompting companies like Astroscale and ClearSpace to develop removal technologies they believe could become a major industry. The problem is accelerating — even without new launches, debris would continue multiplying as objects fragment faster than they naturally re-enter the atmosphere, according to the European Space Agency's Tim Flohrer. This forces active satellites to perform increasing collision-avoidance manoeuvres. Tokyo-listed Astroscale has demonstrated magnetic docking technology and reported 142% revenue growth last year, though it remains unprofitable and relies heavily on government grants. ClearSpace raised €26 million in 2023 for its debris-capture satellite. Both firms see broader opportunities in satellite servicing, repair and life extension. However, the market remains nascent and government-backed. Industry leaders argue that regulation requiring satellite decommissioning would create commercial demand for their services.

Astroscale secures $20.7M overdraft extension from Mizuho Bank through 2029

Astroscale Holdings has secured a JPY 3 billion unsecured overdraft facility from Mizuho Bank, extending a previous arrangement that was due to mature in June 2026. The new agreement runs until 30 June 2029 and will fund working capital for the Tokyo-listed space technology firm. The facility maintains largely unchanged terms from the prior agreement, including covenants requiring non-negative consolidated net assets and minimum liquidity of JPY 5 billion in cash and equivalents. Astroscale said the credit line aims to strengthen financial stability and provide flexible funding for growth investments whilst optimising interest costs. The company expects minimal impact on its financial forecasts for the year ending 30 April 2027. Astroscale specialises in orbital debris removal and in-orbit servicing solutions, operating in the commercial and governmental space sectors.

Astroscale raises $71M to shift from demos to repeatable satellite servicing missions

Astroscale, a Tokyo-based satellite servicing company, reported project income of 11.5 billion yen ($71.1 million) for its 2026 fiscal year ending 30 April, nearly double the previous year's 6.1 billion yen. The company's operating loss improved to 10 billion yen from 18.8 billion yen in 2025. The company raised 30.6 billion yen in May through convertible bonds and equity, with investors including HULIC and Sky Perfect JSAT. Astroscale plans to invest 7 billion yen in expanding production facilities in Japan and the UK, and another 7 billion yen in manufacturing its LEXI-P life-extension spacecraft. Chief executive Nobu Okada said the company is transitioning from technology demonstrations to repeatable commercial missions, particularly for defence customers, with several launches scheduled over the next two years.

Sky Perfect JSAT invests in Astroscale for on-orbit servicing partnership

Sky Perfect JSAT, Japan's largest satellite operator, has invested in Astroscale as part of a strategic partnership focused on on-orbit servicing initiatives. The investment amount was not disclosed. The companies announced Tuesday they will cooperate on satellite inspection, repair and life-extension services led by Astroscale, and plan to jointly develop new business opportunities. Sky Perfect JSAT aims to establish on-orbit servicing as a medium- to long-term growth area alongside its communications and Earth observation businesses. President and CEO Eiichi Yonekura said the space industry is shifting from simply launching satellites to maintaining and enhancing them in orbit. Sky Perfect JSAT has expanded beyond satellite operations into Earth observation, national security and the Space Compass joint venture with NTT.
