Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Medical Assistant certificate of completion from an appropriately accredited program or institute is required, although relevant work experience may substitute for the education certificate if post-education Medical Assistant certification is presented or obtained.
  • A credentialed Medical Assistant certification from a recognized accrediting or certifying body is required; accepted credentials include Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, National Certified Medical Assistant, and Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant.
  • If the recognized credentialed Medical Assistant certification is not obtained at hire, it must be obtained within 12 months of the hire date as a condition of continued employment.
  • A minimum of two years of previous experience is required.
  • An active American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers is required.
  • A Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education Certificate is required.
  • Strong communication skills with patients, families, and the clinical team are required.
  • The ability to adapt and remain flexible in new, different, or changing environments is required.
  • Strong time-management skills to prioritize and act proactively are required.
  • The ability to uphold professional ethics and maintain patient confidentiality is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist medical providers with multi-skilled clinical tasks and patients’ healthcare management.
  • Provide hands-on patient care under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies while practicing within ethical, legal, regulatory, and institutional standards.
  • Support patients’ individual, emotional, spiritual, and comfort needs while maintaining a healing environment.
  • Prioritize and integrate multiple requests and work expectations while performing tasks safely, professionally, and on time.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and appropriate clinical team members and seek assistance when needed.
  • Participate in unit or clinic programs and meetings to support team building and conflict resolution.
  • Use available technology resources for communication, documentation, and locating pertinent clinical information.
  • Maintain current clinical competencies and pursue ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Practice within the clinical scope of practice and follow applicable University, state, and federal standards, protocols, rules, and regulations.
  • Provide and accept constructive feedback and guidance.
  • Protect patient privacy and use therapeutic communication.
  • Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment and examination rooms with appropriate supplies, instruments, and materials.
  • Explain basic examination procedures and prepare patients for physician care.
  • Perform vital signs, electrocardiograms, and phlebotomy, and document results in the patient’s medical record.
  • Clean and sterilize medical instruments using sterile technique.
  • Schedule patients for tests and complete required laboratory forms.
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
  • Order, stock, and inventory supplies.
  • Assist with clerical duties and safeguard University assets.
