Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Five years of medical assistant experience with highly complex chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline is required.
  • A Certified Medical Assistant credential through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA, Registered Medical Assistant credential, or EMT certification is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association or instructor certification is required.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required.
  • Knowledge of medical practice, patient care, examinations, diagnostic and treatment procedures, medical equipment, and instruments is required.
  • Clinical quality assurance and accurate medical-record maintenance skills are required.
  • Computer proficiency for documentation and work-related purposes is required.
  • Advanced assessment competencies appropriate for the level of practice are required.
  • Current certifications and completion of required continuous and department-specific training must be maintained.
Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality medical assistant support to assigned patient populations under the direct supervision of a physician and/or registered nurse.
  • Assist with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressing changes.
  • Perform general administrative duties in accordance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, National Committee for Quality Assurance, government standards, and company policies.
  • Schedule patient appointments, ensure medical-necessity compliance, and verify eligibility for care as required.
  • Serve as a preceptor and clinical resource to medical assistants by training, orienting, guiding, mentoring, and providing structured feedback.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional healthcare team and communicate pertinent patient-care information.
  • Complete pre-visit planning workflows and obtain or request appropriate documentation.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, chief complaints, medication reviews, medical and social histories, diagnostic measurements, treatments, and procedures in the electronic medical record.
  • Follow up with patients regarding recommendations, medications, laboratory and radiology results, specialist visits, primary-care visits, dieticians, and diabetes educators.
  • Coordinate care with hospitals, emergency departments, consulting physicians, and community resources, including handling patient inquiries.
  • Report patient observations, conditions, problems, and abnormal clinical findings to physicians and nurses while protecting patient privacy and safety.
  • Perform routine patient tests including electrocardiograms, rapid streptococcal tests, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests.
  • Sterilize instruments and equipment and prepare, clean, and maintain examination and treatment rooms, supplies, and equipment.
  • Stock examination rooms, take inventory, and order supplies.
  • Manage time and prioritize daily tasks while coordinating colleagues to meet department demands.
  • Participate in professional development, department-based educational activities, and performance-improvement initiatives.
  • Complete and update the My Development plan.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification through ACA is preferred.
