Requirements
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in criminalistics, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a closely related physical science field.
  • Completion of 8 semester units of chemistry with laboratory coursework and 8 units of organic chemistry with laboratory coursework.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation, which may include criminal history records, driving records, drug/alcohol screening, and related employment and personal history checks.
  • Candidates must clear Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting and undergo fingerprinting.
  • Applicants must include all information substantiating their minimum qualifications on the application by the filing deadline.
Responsibilities
  • Retrieve evidence from crime scenes, property control, medical examiner's offices, or other custodians while following established chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Preserve evidence by inventorying, documenting, and safekeeping it according to established laboratory standards.
  • Comply with quality-control procedures to ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and reagents, and train laboratory staff and officers in their use.
  • Prepare, store, and dispose of chemicals according to established safety standards to ensure personal safety and the validity of the scientific process.
  • Document case observations and interpretations through detailed notes, photographs, sketches, and charts.
  • Prepare and participate in the review of technical reports interpreting case examinations.
  • Use and maintain technical laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Present court testimony as an expert witness concerning conclusions drawn from laboratory examinations and analyses.
  • Identify controlled substances, including cocaine, heroin, pharmaceuticals, and others.
  • Assist with breath-alcohol analysis and instrumental support.
  • Participate in proficiency testing to comply with national quality-assurance standards.
  • Receive on-the-job training in the examination and identification of chemical substances and the performance of basic chemical analytical tests.
  • Perform evidence screening, reagent preparation, sample handling, routine instrument operation and maintenance, and progressively complex chemical analysis casework as training progresses.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest in forensic chemistry or criminalistics through coursework, internships, workshops, or professional development activities.
  • Familiarity with chemical analysis principles such as chromatography, spectrophotometry, or other instrumental methods used in forensic testing.
  • Experience documenting laboratory observations, maintaining notes, and preparing accurate technical summaries.
