Requirements
- An Associate's degree and 2 years of experience in cardiac imaging or a related field, including 1 year of independent clinical echocardiographic scanning experience in a hospital and/or outpatient environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
- Working knowledge of cardiology, cardiovascular hemodynamics, Doppler physics and instrumentation, and cardiac and vascular ultrasound technologies is required.
- Compliance with UR Radiation Safety Standards is required.
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certification upon hire is required, or Registered Cardiac Sonographer certification upon hire is required.
- Active registry status in adult cardiac sonography through continuing professional education credits is required.
- Active Basic Life Support status is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of technical procedures using high-frequency ultrasound waves for diagnostic purposes.
- Perform routine and specialized independent echocardiographic studies, including transthoracic, stress echocardiographic, transesophageal, and contrast examinations, at outpatient facilities within the UR Medicine enterprise.
- Apply independent judgment during examinations to accurately capture anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions in exam images according to current echocardiography policies and procedures.
- Perform cardiac measurements to generate preliminary findings and acquire and store images to support the interpreting physician's finalized diagnostic report.
- Demonstrate radiation safety competency to perform ASA, pericardiocentesis, and intracardiac echocardiography procedures under the supervision of an echo attending or interventional cardiologist in the catheterization laboratory.
- Obtain pertinent patient history and review prior echocardiographic studies to optimize examinations.
- Prepare examination rooms and ultrasound equipment for cardiac ultrasound studies in accordance with universal precautions and approved protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Communicate with patients in a manner appropriate for their understanding.
- Obtain vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, height, and weight.
- Evaluate contraindications that may limit examination completeness.
- Use proper patient positioning and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient and sonographer comfort and safety.
- Assist with education and training of cardiology fellows and student interns.
- Participate in research echocardiograms with differing protocols and specific credentialing when applicable.
- Attend echocardiography conferences offered at URMC and/or local and national echocardiography or cardiology conferences to increase clinical knowledge.
- Keep laboratories and examination rooms clean and in working order, including cleaning ultrasound equipment and transducers according to laboratory policy.
- Troubleshoot and report equipment malfunctions and problems to the lead sonographer.
- Keep inventory and supplies current and stocked in each examination room.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- Registered Vascular Technologist certification upon hire is preferred.
