Requirements
  • A high school diploma, GED, or 10 years of work experience is required.
  • One year of health care experience is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment and collaborate with others is required.
  • The role requires constant standing and walking; frequent oral communication, hearing, lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 pounds, reaching, gripping, and keyboard use/data entry; and occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting, repetitive movements, lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 pounds, moving patients, odor detection, and driving.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for eye examinations and procedures.
  • Perform preliminary vision tests, including visual acuity, tonometry, and refraction.
  • Assist with diagnostic imaging such as optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, and visual field testing.
  • Document patient history and maintain accurate medical records in the electronic medical record system.
  • Educate patients on eye health, medications, and post-procedure care under the direction of an eye-care provider.
  • Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
  • Assist eye-care providers in the examination and treatment of patients.
  • Initiate documentation of the patient’s chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings.
  • Perform visual acuity measurement, color vision testing, lensometry, keratometry, pupil-function testing, tonometry, automated perimetry, extraocular muscle evaluation, confrontation visual field testing, and other patient services requested by the provider.
  • Act as a scribe by documenting clinically relevant interactions and dialogue during patient visits, including history and examination, diagnoses, orders, evaluation and management information, follow-up, and patient instructions.
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures and laser treatments in the office, including application and removal of dressings as directed.
  • Inventory and maintain surgical instruments in accordance with system and department standards.
  • Screen patients and calls for emergency or urgent situations and obtain pertinent information for the provider.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited ophthalmic assistant program.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification, or willingness to obtain it within 18 months of hire.
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting.
